Will be riding a bedroom on the Zephyr in June.

Is the first-class lounge in Chicago Union Station a safe place to store bags for several hours?

I did not do that in the New York lounge because I saw that there was no one watching the storage area and anyone could walk out with any bag that they liked.

Is it different in Chicago? If not, can you check them with the baggage claim window person for several hours, similar to what you can do in LA and Portland?

In Chicago it is perfectly safe to store your bags in the lounge. After you check in at the attendant's desk, you turn around for the storage room. That room is off limits to all passengers and manned by a redcap. You hand over your bags and the card you received at the desk so that the Redcap knows that you've checked in. They'll take your bags, store them, and give you back that card & luggage tags for your bags.

It is free to actually store your bags, but the redcaps do appreciate a tip even though that is not an actual requirement.

I have zero concern about luggage safety in the lounge.

same here i will be in chicago in a couple weeks and i have no quams about leaveing my bag while i go over to mcdonalds in the food court

We've left our overnight bags and my bagged laptop, in the lounge baggage room and everything was there when we got back. It is customary to throw the baggage attendant a few bucks when you retrieve the bags.

I will echo what everyone else has said : perfectly safe

Have a good trip

Thanks to everyone for putting any concerns to rest.

As for tipping, I worked my way through college as, variously, a car valet, a hotel luggage handler, and an airport skycap.

I can tell you first-hand how appreciated tips were, and still are, to people working those jobs. Anyone in those positions who give me decent service--let alone fantastic service--get outsize tips from me. It's a hard job where many times you only hear complaints.

Okay question...since I don't travel by train and will be for the first time this summer, what is this lounge you speak of in chicago. On my return trip from NJ I will have a 8-9 hour layover in chicago waiting to catch the Cardinal back to indianapolis. I figured my only option was the lockers they offered at the station for luggage storage, is there another option?

Assuming that you're traveling in a sleeping car either into Chicago or are in a sleeper on the departing Cardinal, then as a sleeping class passenger you are entitled to utilize Amtrak's first class lounge in Chicago. These lounges are a nice quiet refuge in the often-bustling train station. They have nice plush chairs, conference rooms, computer terminals, newspapers, TV's, luggage storage, free soft drinks, juices, coffee, tea, and clean safe bathrooms. They also allow you to board your train before the rest of the masses.

In Chicago the lounge is called the "Metropolitan Lounge". It is located on the lower level of Union Station, which is also the track level. If you are standing in front of the Amtrak ticket windows, then the Amtrak waiting area is to your left. When you enter the main Amtrak waiting area through a sliding glass door, just walk forward and slightly to the left. There should be another sliding glass door along with a sign, unless they've changed the entrance in the last few months. Again, just show your tickets and relax.

They'll also give you a card that contains the time that you need to return to the lounge by, in order to board the train and not miss it. If you do leave the lounge, take this card with you as it is also your pass for reentering the lounge. Just wave it at the attendants as you walk in and one will usually look up and acknowledge you and the card. Note the Chicago lounge can be very busy and it sometimes can be hard to get a seat, but you still get the free stuff and priority boarding.

Note: They may make you leave your carry-on bags in the luggage room inside the lounge, if the lounge is very crowded. There is a redcap manning this room who will give you a claim check for your bags, such that you can claim them shortly before you board the train. One nice advantage of this is the fact that you can park your carryon bags here, while you wander around Chicago and do lunch, assuming that your trains arrive on time.

Also never leave any valuables in your luggage or your bedroom when you are not there. Take all wallets and purses with you, when you are moving about the train. There are usually no problems, but don't tempt the fates. Also don't leave any important medicines in your luggage while in Chicago, keep it with you.

I've used the metropolitan lounge several times at Chicago Union station in travelling back to my hometown of 57 years! As long as you have a sleeping car reservation it's available for your use. Both the lounge entry and the luggage store room are attended. It certainly seemed perfectly safe and secure to me. Regarding station lockers...I believe that is thing past ever since 9/11 and security issues. Train stations and airports in the US seldom, if ever, have banks of pay lockers available. You occasionally may find a locker storage business near a station. I think there is one near Penn Station in NYC.

In Denver I have been able to store my non-checked bag with the baggage claim window for a few hours even though I was not checling it and riding in coach. But when I went to retrieve, no one was there, and I just walked in and got it myself!
