U.S. Sens. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) and Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) yesterday introduced a bill designed to streamline the federal government's environmental permitting process for rail infrastructure projects.

The proposed "Track, Railroad and Infrastructure Network Act" (TRAIN) would add rail to the project permitting streamlining that was included in the MAP-21 surface transportation law that Congress passed in 2012, Blunt said in a press release.

If this means simply that railroads should get the same easier rules as highways, I'm all for it.

I'm sure that both these Senators are thinking about the freights, not passenger rail, but I don't see how it could hurt Amtrak. If it speeds things up by even a few months on South of the Lake project, D.C.-Richmond, or Richmond-Petersburg-Raleigh, then it could help greatly. Hey, maybe the River Runner Kansas City-St Louis and Lincoln Service St Louis-Chicago could benefit. And a daily Cardinal too.
