This afternoon, 7/31/10, I traveled from Winter Park, FL to Orlando (Silver Meteor 97) and back to Winter Park (Silver Meteor 98) (10 miles round trip). Although it was about 94 degrees outside, everything went smoothly. Both trains were pretty much on time. While picking up my tickets in the Winter Park station, the couple in front of me was attempting to check their luggage. One suit case weighed 55 pounds and it was returned to them to remove stuff and put it in the other suitcase. It was pretty entertaining to watch them to do this. There was a grandfather taking his 2 small grandchildren on a short round trip train trip who was on the same trains I was on. The children seem to really enjoy the adventure. I noticed that train 98 had an extra diner after the coaches (deadheaded?). The attendant said they would be dropping it off somewhere. I also noticed that there was an extra coach in the front of train ahead of the sleepers.

I heard the attendant mention that 101 people boarded the 98 Silver Meteor in Orlando. I think that is more than average.

Nice trip pennyk. When I took my trip to/from Washington earlier this month, a boatload of people got on 98 at Orlando and off 97 at Orlando, including tons of kids. I didn't count them, but I wouldn't be surprised if the number approached 100. It's summer vacation and families are taking the kiddies to see the Mouse.

You know, if I were fortunate enough to live near a place where I could make that type of short turn, I think I'd do so almost every day!

Thanks for the report.

I would too. I do consider myself fortunate in that the nearest station is only an hour away and is fully staffed. (Spokane), even though a run like that is in no way possible from Spokane. Even those overnight hours for the EB there is better than being several hours from a station.

Those deadhead moves were most likely from Hialeah to Sunnyside.

Where is Sunnyside? I had not noticed deadhead cars on the Silver Meteor in a long time.

Sunnyside is in New York, and that is where pretty much all Viewliner and Amfleet II allocation to specific consists assigned to specific low level LD trains is actually executed. So it does keep some reserves. Hialeah is the service base for Viewliners and possibly Amfleet IIs too, so it is not unusual for cars to be ferried between Hialeah and Sunnyside and vice versa.
