It took about 100 drawings before Herbert Matter came up with his famous design for New Haven Railroad.

Looks like at one point, he was really determined to make a "star" logo work.

Some were excellent (I loved the very Art Deco* wheels logo at 0:25), some were surprisingly ahead of their time (the converging rails at 1:17-1:19), but some were totally bizarre.

As to it actually being the identifiable logo for a company several had the N and H almost totally obscured in other foofaraws unless you knew they were there (0:52-1:08 in particular), and several others did not make clear whether it was NH or HN**

*Which probably would have been considered horribly out-of-style in 1955 when everything old was ... just old, not new again.
