I'm playing around with some possible scenarios for a trip next fall. Since I've taken the CZ from CHI to PRO, I'd like to take the CZ from PRO to EMY after flying into SLC (to save time & $).

Would those "in the know" advice against taking the light rail(s) from the airport to PRO. I see on google maps that the frontrunner station is across the tracks and just south of the Amtrak station. Is it walkable?

I know the PRO Amtrak station does not even have a Amshack (but a nice pavilion), so timing the trip so that I can minimize my wait at PRO would be nice.

I guess my other option would be to take the CZ from EMY to PRO then catch the light rail(s) to the airport...if they run that early.

Again, I'm just playing around with this at this time.

I haven't been to SLC since the new station opened, but you can get a cab from the SLC airport to the Amtrak station easily. It is about 3-5 miles. Keep in mind that the eastbound CZ departs about 3:30 am (I believe)! Even if Frontrunner was available, I think they shut down early - something like 11 pm!

One minor nit. TRAX light rail does not go to Provo. You will have to take TRAX Green Line from SLC Airport to SLC Frontrunner station and then take Frontrunner to Provo Central.

It appears to be doable at least in the SLC Airport to Provo direction. The travel time is 1:30. Frontrunner is hourly at that time of the day with arrivals in Provo at 8:11pm and 9:12pm. The latter is about 15 mins before the CZ departure west/north from Provo. The former an hour and 15 mins. Don't know the details of the nature of the walk, but AFAIR it is a short, several hundred feet walk across the S 200 W and the railroad tracks at the grade crossing.

Of course, you could avoid Provo entirely by leaving the airport an hour later and take TRAX Green Line to SLC Frontrunner/Amtrak station arriving at around 10:30 for a little after 11pm arrival of the CZ.

Thanks Jis. That's what I've seen so far on my brief research. I was pretty sure I'd have to change trains (TRAX to Frontrunner). I was more concerned, at this point, about the walk from the one station to the other, especially at night. I found SubwayNut's webpage for the Frontrunner station and it showed the grade crossing between the two stations.

I know that it would be easier to catch the train at SLC, but that would leave a gap in my CZ travels (been hanging out at AU too much...wanting to ace a route :help:  :p )

Of course, this is just wishful thinking at this point. Hope to have the money to take a train at least part way to or from the Gathering. And then there's the "problem" of where my daughter's family may be living in Oct 2014 that could make including a visit with them part of the trip.

Should be very walkable. I did a transfer from the Amtrak to the Greyhound station in SLC last year, and I saw the Frontrunner right next to us. The light rail is just behind the Amtrak station, I believe. All of it is within a pedestrian plaza except for the Greyhound, which has a service entrance for buses to enter and exit the Greyhound station.

Dave, Jeb...I'm talking about PRO (Provo), not SLC, in my scenarios .
To clarify: The FrontRunner transfers at the same station as Amtrak and the light rail do in SLC. What you'll do is come in on the light rail from the airport to the station that serves Amtrak and Frontrunner, walk past the Amtrak station, and catch the Frontrunner on the tracks there to go to PRO.

Edit: nevermind. I see what you're saying...how will the Frontrunner to Amtrak transfer work in PRO, not the Traxx to Frontrunner transfer in SLC. Doh.

Now you got it. :) I had to make things difficult, didn't I? :D

I have been to Provo as recently as last year, and there was a period between 1991 and 1995 when I was essentially weekly commuting to Provo/Orem. I spent weekends at home in NJ and the week in the offices of Novell, first in Provo and then in Orem after Novell moved its executive offices to Orem after acquiring Wordprefect. So I am rather familiar with that area and the people and the idiosyncrasies of the Wasatch Front more than I ever wanted to. :p Having week long meetings at Sundance was an added bonus.

I was in Provo/Orem in Nov 2011 (my first LD trip) and then again in Aug 2012 (to see my newborn grandson). My daughter, SIL & grandson moved back to DE in April, but may be moving to SLC (or Austin  ) if my SIL gets a job offer (he's interviewed for both places recently). If they do end up back in Utah, then taking the train from the airport to Provo won't be an issue. :p

When I was there in 2011, we went up to Park City. It's a neat town. We enjoyed the museum in the old firehouse.
