Greetings:

When I get enough points to redeem for a sleeper...If I am travelling with another person, what kind of fare do they need to purchase? And will they get points since they are not redeeming an award?

Many thanks...

If you're sharing a room with them, the points cover both of you. :)

Example: my boyfriend and I share a roomette from Chicago to Albuquerque. 15,000 points covers both of us in the roomette as well as two business class seats from Kalamazoo to Chicago.

It's pretty great!

I just booked a trip from SVT to San Fran using the Texas Eagle with a roommate using my points. It was my first time using my points and was shocked it included ALL my train tickets PLUS upgraded me to business class on another connecting train! Not bad for spending $100 to fill out points!

A sleeper award includes the room, rail fare for 1 or 2 (provided both are named on the reservation) and all meals in the Dining Car for both. Also, if the train you are traveling on does not have a sleeper but does offer business class (example a Surfliner or a NEC regional), you are both entitled to BC! (Note that this does not include an Acela.)

The way I remind the agent is very gentle!

The Surfliner is in business class, right?
This way, I'm not pushy, and if the agent didn't book BC automatically, you're not playing the "Do you know who I am?" card. Most agents will book it without asking, but a (very) few may not.

I just booked a trip for July using AGR covering my mom in room H on the Empire Builder. My sister is listed as her companion. They both ride for 20,000 points (two zones) and no cash out of pocket for that leg of our trip. Pretty cool, if you ask me.

As I read the rules - it should be noted that Special Routes such as Illinois Lincoln Service are NOT included in this. So the cool factor is limited for those of us in Illinois who want travel time options with Lincoln Service versus riding Texas Eagle to Chicago to connect with long distance routes.

"Special Routes: A separate redemption is required for each Special Route travel segment, with the exception of 3000-6999 series Thruway service"

Read the rest of it. :)

  • At the member's option, Special Route travel may be included with an award for redemption travel by zone. Example: Portland, ME – Boston, MA – New Haven, CT using the Downeaster and Northeast Regional routes is permitted at the Northeast Zone point value.

Yup! One example would be taking a one-zone redemption between Denver and San Diego. You HAVE to take the Pacific Surfliner between LAX and SAN, which means you'll be traveling on a "Special Segment" train. No need to redeem a separate 1,500 points though; you book it through either on a Coach or Sleeper reward.
