sp 4449 15 year inspection

i understand sp 4449 is being taken out of service for a 15 year inspection. what is involved in this, how long should it take, is this required for all steam engines? thanks

I can confidently answer one question. Yes, all steam engines are required by the FRA to undergo a rebuild/inspection every 15 years. For example, UP 3985, the Challenger, is currently undergoing this work. Hopefully someone can explain this better, but the process involves replacing the boiler tubes. Since the steam engine is being taken apart anyway, this is also a good time to do other repairs as needed. How much work is being done determines how long it will take along with, of course, how much money is backing the project. Feel free to donate to help the 4449 along.
