I have heard Chicago is famous for having great steaks. Are there any good places near the station, and which cut of meat should I look for? (I'm guessing not a New York strip). Any idea of price ranges?

Gene & Georgetti's - http://geneandgeorgetti.com/ - try the Kansas City strip. I love it, and our resident Gastronomic experts (the 2 Joes) have also enjoyed it.

Lawry's Steakhouse (yes, the guys with the steak seasoning) - http://www.lawrysonline.com/lawrys-primerib/chicago/general-info - get the prime rib

Weber Grill - http://www.webergrillrestaurant.com/locations/?chicago&mcid=0&scid=3&id=79 - pricier, shirt sleeves required (no t-shirts or tank tops). I have not been here, so I can't vouch for it.

Gene and Georgettis is First Rate for sure!

Also Mortons. 1050 N State St is darn good but pricey and dressy also!

I am going to second Lawry's. The Lawry's cut prime rib was so good my niece cried with happiness. When food is that good you don't pass up the opportunity. It is a classy place, so no t-shirts were seen during my visit. Plenty of dress shirts and polo's. You not only go to Lawry's for the outstanding food, but for the experience.

I went to Lawry's back in the 80's and still remember how good it was.

All this talk about steaks & prime rib made me go treat myself to prime rib tonight. Not as good as Lawry's I'm sure, but since I rarely eat beef, I enjoyed it.

There are countless excellent restaurants in Chicago. Having lived here most of my life, I have been to many. Gene and Georgetti is at the top of the list. Of course Ruth Chris of Texas, is here in town.

However, Wildfire has been a mainstay go-to joint for years. the food is great and has IMHO the most pleasant interior decor. Also it is extremely easy to reach from Chicago Union Station.

They are located on Erie Street a block west of North La Salle Street an 8 minute cab or bus ride on CTA #156 which boards near the southwest corner of CUS across the street on the southeast corner of Canal and Jackson Street. (The street signs at that corner are clearly marked.) Just tell the bus driver to let you off at or near Erie, and walk a short block west.

Wildfire does carry out and I have often stopped here for dinner before, and to-go groceries for midnight snacking overnight on the Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited.

Going west out of NPV, I do Rosebud for lunch before boarding the Cali Zephyr or Southwest Chief and bring midnight snacks to go.

(The original Rosebud is also not far from CUS (southwest of the station on Taylor Street.)

For those that want Italian steak very near to CUS, the original Maggiano is on Grand Avenue.

Wow, Amtrak, want to treat your passengers to some excellent catering? With all the restaurants here near CUS, there absolutely is no need to serve "iffy" food out of Chicago. How about "Midwest regional inspired" meals catered by portion control from several of these fine restaurants?

Mangia, mangia!

I don't know much about "near CUS" however having frequented many steak houses in Chicago during my layovers, I'll say the best prime rib I've had was at LAWRY's.

The Chicgao Chop House I'll second as serving excellent steaks.

The absolute most delicious steak I've had in Chicago though was the porterhouse at Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse @ 1028 N. Rush St.

Oh my gosh. I forgot about Maggiano's. That place is amazing. I go there for the Italian food; though, I'm sure they have good steak too.

Thanks for the replies. I looked at a few websites and all those restaurants look great . If I am able to go out and get a steak on my upcoming trip I'll post back here. (some of the Italian places look good also)!

In the preAmtrak days, the Santa Fe trains out of Chicago had excellent steaks. I went from Chicago to LA in August, 1970. I was able to board the Super Chief an hour before departure. By 6:30pm, when we departed Dearborn Station, I was nursing a martini in the dome of the Pleasure Dome Lounge Car. I went to dinner departing North Chillicothe and had one of best steaks ever.
