While these extended "smoke stops" provide a way to stretch your legs, the more attractive long stops for us are on the Eastern trains that serve the horrible flex meals. For instance when we take the Cardinal to Chicago, that 55 minute stop at Washington DC is something that we very much look forward to. We will leave the train go into the station and enjoy some fresh cooked food and an Espresso. Sometimes we bring back meals to the train. AFAIK, this is the only stop for the Eastern routes where you can do this. Pittsburgh on the CL route can be a long stop but there are no restaurants in or around that station to get a quick fresh cooked meal especially at 5 AM or midnight. .Same with the times at Indianapolis for the Card.
At Alburquerque on the SWC there is a long stop going east. . The food in the dining car is fairly good but there is a grocery store a block from the station where you can buy yogurt, ice cream, treats, or whatever.
