I know this thread is from five years ago, but here goes.
My avatar is of the Texas Eagle departing Dallas. I had joined AU right after I had booked my first cross country train trip, on the Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited and LSL. I wanted to get as much info as possible about the ride, so in the spirit of it, I choose that avatar.

The only good photo I could find of my beloved home train station—Vernon J. Ehlers Station in Grand Rapids, Mich. They did a good job several years ago in designing and building this station, which is situated a hundred yards or so from the Greyhound/Indian Trailways/central local bus terminal. I hope to live long enough to see a second track built at the platform to accommodate more scheduled trains. Perhaps to Lansing? Traverse City? Kalamazoo? I’d ride in coach to Mexico City if it meant boarding at Ehlers Station.
Mine is the culmination of an ongoing in-joke between me and Ryan.
Several years ago, I called Ryan "a fact-checker crossed with a ferret", which was my way of complimenting how quickly he could confirm/deny the armchair quarterbacking, wild hypotheses, and false beliefs that often occur on this forum.
He took my compliment and listed it under his Interests (under his avatar).
The "fact-checking ferret" thing came up on occasion over the years but then didn't get mentioned for quite some time.
About a year ago, I posted some statistical analysis in a thread about plane crashes and provided citations for all of my statistics. He sent me a PM that asked, "Who's the fact-checking ferret now?" and then attached a picture of a ferret wearing aviator gear.
I thought it was perfect (and adorable), so I made it my avatar.

My avatar is from the station in Milwaukee during an extended stop on the Empire Builder. They sent our train out out of Chicago on time, and we waited here for some passengers from a late eastern train to come along on the next Hiawatha.
(I was on my way to a cousin's wedding in Seattle. Some of my relatives thought I was crazy to take the train, but I made it on time. My parents' flight got delayed, and they missed the rehearsal entirely!)

This is a photo of a old Wig Wag type signal that's on a crossing about a block from my house. Besides keeping the riff raff on the other side of the tracks

Running to catch the 20th Century Limited to Chicago with intentions gliding along and sipping Manhattans in the observation car lounge as the skyscrapers of NYC fade into the distance. Only a dream of course... but reliving it often and glad to have a chance to share it with other rail enthusiasts on the AU forum.

Hay there Bob... no hiding... I see you up there in that cab driving that Amtrak train!
My avatar is the waiting shelter at the Amtrak station in Chemult Oregon. Very few people actually use it. People either wait in their car until the scheduled time for the train and then wander up to the platform or they ride the bus that comes south from Redmond with stops in Bend, Sunriver(if necessary) and LaPine.
If the train is running late, they will spend some extra time in LaPine. The bus driver is good about letting people sit on the bus until it is time to unload the luggage.
