Looking at timetable CHI to LAX via Texas Eagle. I see that I need to plan a Monday night arrival into SAS San Antonio, but departure isn't listed until 5 something Tuesday morning. My question is; are roomette passengers required to detrain upon arrival into SAS and reboard another sleeper later in the morning to conitnue to LAX, or do you stay put in sleper at the station? I am guessing passengers terminate at SAS due to the departure is listed as another train number which I assume means either sitting in the station for 4-5 hours or grabbing a hotel for the same time frame. Anybody experienced with this situation/

if you are booked on train 421 you have a one seat ride. any other number you have to leave.they take the coach car that is 421 and the 421 sleeper and add it to the sunset limited which continues to LAX.

Train #449 is the Lake Shore Limited, AW. You meant train #421.

JBN,

If you are booked on train 421, then you will be allowed to remain in your room and asleep in San Antonio. If however you got booked on trains #21 and then train #1, you will have to detrain in San Antonio and await the arrival of the Sunset Limited inside the station.

Know that it will cost more to book train #421 however.

Just a note here as I often book #421 CHI-LAX when I go that route because I love the fact you get 3 nights in the same bedroom or roomette.

You are pretty much free to get on and off the train in SAS throughout the night... except for brief periods of 20-30 minutes when they are switching around the cars at the station.

I often will like to walk over to the Alamo and River Walk when the train gets in... and then get back around 2AM or so. Both the Alamo and River Walk are within easy walking distance from the train. While the Alamo isn't open during those hours, you can see the outside of it and get some pretty dramatic pictures.

Just a thought if youre a night person like me!

Is there a problem getting back on at 2:00am? What security is in place?

The car Attendant on my trip west that boarded is SAS announced to the 5 of us that were by the door that She would be locking the door at ?, about an hour, So an option to wander was not possible last April/May. I had considered going over to the Alamo but decided I did not want to get locked out. This Same Car Attendant put away most of the juice that the previous Attendant had left out and put up a sign that "sleeper's were limited to one glass per day" While never rude this Attendant was the worst attendant I have ever had. Another Announcement of her was "I will make the bed at (time) if this is not convenient then do it yourself" The next morning while I was at breakfast She reset the bed without even asking. Most everything was great on this trip so all she did was loose her tip.

Wow, this sounds like our experience the last week of January 2010. The attendant from Chicago to San Antonio was great, from there to L.A. the attendant had a "military style" of operations.

We were told that the door to the sleeping car would be locked at 11:00 pm, so if we wandered we would need to return to the Station and await re-entry around 5:00 am. No re-entry from 11:00 pm - 5:00 am.

Was the CHI-SAS a black Gentleman (forget his name) and the SAS Attendant a Black Lady (Also forget her Name)? I bet they are the same, as the first left the train I was generous with my tip.

Eric: Hope I never get "the boss" on the SSL, Ive been lucky every time I rode it, some of the best Ive had from NOL-SAS were old timers so perhaps thats it!(Ken and Brian were the names!) Ive had a couple of vanishing SCAs on the CONO and a few bossy LSAs and waiters in the diner but generally the rudest/worst employees were the cafe attendants on the Eastern trains and the gate ****s in CHI and back East! Did you happen to let Customer relations know about this Furher in training? (BTW- is the n*** word now edited automatically or by Admin?Used to it described these type of employees perfectly, especially the gate and lounge bosses!

It's part of the automatic bad word filters.
i think it should be allowed as it gets the message out.

maybe we should blast this in CUS

Aloha

I don't get the connection to the video. The Animation was fantastic and the music good but just how does apply to the subject?

And just to restate the second Car Attendant was not rude, just very limited, and their race was never an issue, just their method of service.

the song translated into English is left 2 3 4 the lyrics are saying "they want my heart to be on the right but i look down and it beats left there". its more for the gate keepers at CUS sense some run it like a jail.

Does Jim sound right for the male attendant? The description sounds like the SCA I had going from SAS-CHI and he was excellent, even laid out a bunch of his own personal magazines so we'd have stuff to read. He had his hands full on that trip because there were 2 different families with handicapped moms on our car and he was bringing down all of the meals for everyone in both families. He said he lived in Chicago, so it was probably the same guy.

I had a GREAT SCA from LAX to SAS:
  • Young
  • Blond
  • Cute
Is there more?

:p
Female???

Actually, I had a GREAT,young, Blond, Cute, Femaile SCA on the EB - her name was Stephanie - any of you guys runinto her. One of the best and cute too!

SCA's name was Veronica!

She said that she normally works the CS. Makes me want to take a ride on the CS! :p

Everytime I was on the Texas Eagle #421 (including late in 2009 as the last time) they would always lock the SLEEPER door, but always leave the COACH door open all night so passengers on the #421 coach could go out and smoke. Maybe it's up to the attendant?? But its hard to believe they would lock people in the #421 coach all night and not let them get out to smoke at all?

The #421 COACH and SLEEPER are connected most of the night. I have never had a problem getting in and out of the coach and then walking back to my sleeper... but I guess the best thing is to check before you get out and do it.
