From a usually reliable source...

Heads up! Joe Boardman and other Amtrak Brass will be making an inspection/tour trip on several LD routes starting in the Northeast and heading to the West Coast. Word has is that 3 passenger cars including Ocean View & Beech Grove will tack onto the rear of the Southwest Chief train #3 departing Chicago on May 24th bound for Los Angeles, then head up to Seattle on the Coast Starlight, then back down to Portland then east on the Builder and finally back to D. Can't confirm details, but stay tuned....

They may very well be on an interview trip, to talk with candidates for the upcoming re-org! Now is the time for everyone who thinks they know how to run Amtrak to throw their hat into the ring! Listen up Bruce Richardson!!!

How many AGR points will Joe Boardman get for this trip?

Going to LA but not by the re-timed Sunset Limited?

You think they would like to see how it is working out. Get a feel of what the passangers think. Experience the ride to LA.

Oh wait, never mind

Kind of hard to get a feel for what the passengers think when they can't move between their cars and the rest of the train on Superliner consists.

If they want to get a feel, they should get some accomodations on the train itself, eat in diner, sit in the lounge, etc, rather than in what amount to PVs that make the rest of the train inaccessible.

They need to film an episode of Undercover Boss on the thing.

If the top brass what to really see whats going on in their trains then ride with the rest of the passengers.blend in be undercover and take notes in their sleeper. Sitting in the P/V is not going to solve nothing. All the employes are going to know they are being watched and be on their best behavior.

It's kinda hard for the top brass to "blend in" with the passengers when most of the company knows who they are.

It is my understanding that Joe Boardman will eat in the diner and mingle with the crew as often as possible, but he can hardly go "under cover", as the employees know him on site. The same is true of most of the top brass, who will accompany him. I am sure he is not sitting in his car looking out the window, but I do bet he has a scanner!

The few times Ive seen Beech Grove and other Amtrak Business cars on the LD Trains, the suits aboard did eat in the Diner and talk with pax in the various cars but of course, as has been said, the OBS and T&E Crew knew who they were and acted accordingly! I personally wish Joe Boardman would ride on the TE/Sunset in one of the Ratty Old Sleepers and let me ride in Beech Grove! Id gladly Pay for that!

There actually was an episode from Australia where the CEO of the transcontinental train there went undercover and did many of the duties the crew had to do every day. It was hilarious when he tried to serve drinks in the diner and couldn't get any of the orders to the right people. Even better was trying to unload the baggage car quickly. Not an easy job, apparently.

It was on the Great Southern Rail on the India Pacific --- Perth to Sydney and The Ghan -- Adelaida to Darwin.

I've ridden a lot of miles and would not recognize any of these guys if I bumped into them in the vestibule.

If you were an employee, I would hope you would at least recognize Boardman from photos.
Maybe if I read the Wall St Journal or Business News ... but in another recent thread someone posted that most amtrak employees can't read... heheheh

My SCA on my last trip told me that Boardman and his wife traveled on the Meteor in December in bedroom B. I was also told that Brian Gallagher was on the same train in a sleeper.

I generally bite my tongue, but that was a stupid comment.....and insulting!

Not sure what that's supposed to mean, but you're foolish if you think Boardman's photo only shows up in business newspapers.

Brian ate dinner in the 8400 dining car on that first run of the car last fall, when some of us were lucky enough to be on that same first run for the diner.

And prior to eating dinner, he was all over the train talking to employees (even me :) ), asking questions, and looking at things; no doubt making notes about the things he saw.

brian once relieved an entire dining crew MID ROUTE mid shift closing down the diner cause they did something he didn't like and had a replacement crew flown in. This guy does not mess around. Amtrak needs more of him to go around and I bet allot of bad apples would go elsewhere.
