My wife and I recently completed a Northeast Regional trip from WAS to NLC (New London, CT) with connecting service to Foxwoods Casino. This was our first Amtrak trip since December after spending the winter down south.
Prior to the start of our travel we took advantage of one of my AGR Select passes and waited for our train at the WAS Club Acela lounge. The Desk Attendant in the lounge greeted us with a warm welcome and inquired about our travel itinerary. I told the attendant that we are waiting for Train 86 from Richmond. The attendant informed me that loading for this train will be done at the gate in lieu of departing from the lounge. I acknowledged her response and asked for Redcap service when it was time to board. While waiting in the lounge we enjoyed the amenities of the lounge including complimentary newspapers, breakfast snacks, and beverages. Shortly before the schedule arrival of the train our Redcap arrived. He quickly grabbed our luggage and drove us to our gate. We arrived almost simultaneously as the train parked for departing passengers and later arriving passengers.
As we boarded the train we were standing by the Quiet Car and we decided to stay in this car. Passengers in this car were mostly compliant to the rules of the Quiet Car during our travel. As is usually the case however there was one inconsiderate passenger that ignored the rules and had to be told on more than one occasion to adhere to the rules. The trip north was uneventful probably because this trip has been taken numerous times before. I personally enjoy the sights on the Hell Gate Bridge as we leave New York City. Our train was about 30 minutes late as we pulled into NLC. That was okay by us as we still had to wait another 30 minutes for our bus to take us to Foxwoods.
The bus stop was in close proximity to the train station. The waiting area was a small kiosk that in inclement weather would make waiting for the bus a dreadful experience. The $2.25 fare was a bargain but the ride was on a no frills city transit bus. There was no luggage storage. You had to bring your luggage on the bus and in close quarters from you. The trip totaled 24 miles and took one hour to arrive to the casino. We yet took another bus to our hotel accommodations and within the hour were at the casino losing money!
Until next trip,
