hi again guys,

Do you think Amtrak would give me a break on the upgrade costs if I book in advance, maybe through their 800 number? If you do a lot of coach travel, there's a discount. If I'm booking a bunch of sleeper legs, why not give a discount?

Also: I'd love to have a travel companion, in order to cut the cost of sleeper upgrades during the month. Besides posting here, trainweb, lonely planet, any other ideas on finding travel companions?

Maybe I'll have to ask the coach passengers while traveling?

Amtrak rarely discounts sleeper fares. The only discounts are in the form of low "buckets" which is Amtrak's form of yield management. Booking early will give you the lowest bucket available for that trip.
