Excellent job description, and very well written. Show's a true professional (non-railfan) perspective of a job many of us covet...

I wonder why the BNSF will not let those failing to pass the engineer training revert to former conductor position?

It seems like a waste to throw away someone who has already taken the training and qualified for that position.....

Thanks for posting it.

I am sure there are many reasons, some contractual, some with a better sounding explanation, etc, but I believe it's because Railroads can, if there are not enough volunteers for engine service, force conductors to Engineer training. Pass or terminate prevents a forced conductor, who may prefer his Conductor Seniority/position to going back to the bottom of the board as an Engineer, from failing out of the class, just to go back to his CO seniority on purpose.

Well I suppose that could be the case....but I would have thought that they would have no trouble recruiting engineer applicants...in my way of thinking, the best job on the whole railroad.....
