I'll be traveling on the CS mid july (and got some good advice earlier on another formum!)Sea - Martinez. I have about 2.5 hours to wait for the CS to come from Emeryville. What if the CS is late and I miss the CZ eastbound? Does Amtrak put me up at a motel or what?

Thanks!

If you are more than a couple hours late, you should get off in Sacramento. You'll have a bigger cushion there.

Check with the Starlight Conductor if you suspect you may be losing time and if he or she is on top of the game, should be able to keep you updated and advised. While SAC isn't the best place to kill a several hour early morning layover, it's better than having no train at all!

Just get off at SAC. Why did you choose to backtrack anyways?
More rail miles is always better (well, at least 99.9999999778% of the time). Daylight riding is, IMHO, almost always worth it. In addition, on the CS, there is usually no breakfast before SAC on #11 (if on-time, which it has been recently). I agree with the previous posters - go for Martinez, but watch the timing and stay in contact with the conductors. I remember on trip on #6 where we met #11 in Sacramento due to heavy snowfalls in the mountains (#6 was on-tiime until we started to climb up the mountains ourselves) - perfectly clear weather behind the front and the newly fallen snow (2+ feet) made for a really spectacular ride.

The reason I do it is because I feel the $money$ spent was to experience train travel, not the experience of waitig at the station!!! I'll "Back Track" all day long if it doesnt cost any more!!! Although I do most of my LD Amtrak Travel thru AGR Points!!!

He probably felt that 2ish hours in MTZ was better than 5ish hours in SAC. Why is it a problem that he wants to minimize his time waiting at a station and maximize his time on trains?
So, he wants to minimize waiting time, but now he fears there is not enough waiting time. This does not make sense.

That's the reason he's asking questions! Does that make sense to ya???

A few years ago, I wanted (and planned) to connect between the southbound CS and eastbound CZ in EMY. However, due to being late, I bailed out at MTZ and waited. (I had paid fro a RT ticket SAC-EMY-SAC myself.) So does it make sense that I decided to get off at MTZ - Amtrak would get me back to SAC, but I would have been a no show on the CZ!

Geez, I know you experts are trying to be helpful to less-traveled Amtrak passengers, but sometimes you really do end up being more confusing than clear!

It seems to me that the person who said check with the conductor is giving the clearest answer. In short, get off at the station where the conductor believes you have the best chance of making your connection!!! Am I missing something here?

No, it does NOT! Please stop getting angry!

Maybe the OP could come back and clear this one up. Maybe it was something from the other "railroad forum" he mentioned.

LOL!

I have traveled Amtrak a bit over the last few years, but I dont consider myself an expert! There are so many variables (screw ups) to train travel that you always should cover your ass(have a plan b)!!! As far as this particular thread, I prefer going to MTZ , instead of SAC, because of a breakfast ( after SAC) & more train time (SAC-MTZ-SAC)! Now, I am usually using AGR Pts. but the paid coach fare between SAC & MTZ is only $9 or so. Anyways, to add to your confusion, the last time I traveled this connection, my SCA wasnt at the door to open it for my departure in MTZ. I ran up stairs to find her cleaning a bedroom & totally overlooked me!!! Then we both freaked out!!! I wasnt 2 steps out of the train when the train started rolling on to EMY. I hope this doesnt add too much to your confusion! But , it has been my experience that if you do your home work & listen to what is posted on AU, you will have a sugnificant advantage over the average Rookie!!!!

HAVE FUN

I'm not the OP, but I'll do my best to explain.

When traveling southbound on the Coast Starlight to a connection eastbound on the California Zephyr, Amtrak uses Sacramento as the transfer point. The CS arrives at 6:15 AM. The CZ departs at 11:09, almost a five hour wait. So, many people ask to connect in Martinez, as the wait is shorter.

A few reasons come to mind why MTZ is a better choice:

1) You so not have to get up as early

2) you may enjoy breakfast in the diner, as it is served after departing SAC (on the Starlight, of course)

3) there is not much to do in SAC at 6:15 in the morning, and the station benches are not very comfortable.

4) you will have more time on the train, if you like

Of course, if your southbound Starlight is running late, then all bets are off, and you should make your connection in SAC.

I have done the SAC connection twice, and both times the CS was early into SAC. I wish I had made the reservation to MTZ

If you are not up for taking any chances, then just wait in SAC for the CZ.

Hope this helps :)

I am considering making this connection later this summer. Which of these stations has a better location to get out and go for a walk and stretch my legs for a bit? Any parks or interesting things to see in the mornings nearby? Thanks!

You can walk around the Old Sacramento Historic District, although that early in the morning nothing will be open. There is also a Denny's just across from the station next to the motel, but other than that there is little to do but wait it out on a butt-burning bench in the station.

I walked by 3d and J the other day and I believe the Denny's there is now closed down. There were no cars in the parking lot and all of the Denny's signage is not on the building anymore.

Not at all. The best answers to questions like this usually appear within the first 2 or 3 responses. The rest is just chit-chat.

Thanks all for the great advice (ask the conductor); I didn't mean to stir up some folks

I indeed asked for Martinez for the reasons most of you gave (more train time, etc). But I won't have more than a small bag so can exit at SAC if we're behind time. No problem.

Cheers, all!

I would like to apologize to the group & in particular Swadian. I'm sounding like a few of those member's who's posts were shocking to a new comer, when I first joined! I guess I should heed my own advice & HAVE FUN!!! Swadian, hope to get to meet ya, someday!!!

Amen! I can't even begin to tell you how much I've learned, and what a life-saver this forum has been in my travels. It was here that I learned of the CSX Indy bridge incident last year that was at the start of my cross country trip. And the track work near CHI that affected my Eagle trip a few weeks ago. It was also here that I learned to take Duct Tape whether I thought I'd need it or not. Turns out the roomettes on the Eagle were very cold, and cold air continued to pour out the upper vents above the door even when closed. We took a few issues of the USA Today and taped them to each vent in several rooms making them comfortable for everyone to return to within about a half hour's time. All the people wanted to know how I knew to carry DT, ha! I read and learn. :p I'm surprised there wasn't an onslaught of new people around the end of April on this forum. :D
