Explain the mileage discrepancy to the rental company. Hertz might charge you with theft!

Doing a round trip will fix that problem as long as the actual itinerary is not being tracked and recorded.

If they don't allow it onboard maybe they would. There are limits for the size and weight of carry on bikes.
