Ah well: NPR story on looming strike vote by freight railroads. I have no idea how likely a strike is and it's hard to judge from the story. I have tickets for 17 December, and there's no way I could afford a plane ticket if I could even find one at this point, and it's too far to my mom's for me to drive (she explicitly told me not to try to drive it) so I guess if the strike happens, I'm stuck HERE like I was in 2020.

really hoping some plan can be hammered out. (My mom is 86, I lost my dad in 2019, so I'm all too aware that I have limited Christmases left with her)

Plane tickets can be found for low prices even at the last minute and they can be changed for no fee (or cancelled for a credit that can be reused). Given how Amtrak cancels trains for so many reasons, I often book a plane ticket as a back-up.
