I think the best bit is north of Santa Barbara, running along the coast.

Beachtastic!

Much of the trip between Sacramento and Eugene is made in the dark, depending on the season and whether the train is on-time. NB gets the train into Klamath Falls during daylight hours, even when it's on-time. During the longest days of the year, it should get into Dunsmuir, near Mt. Shasta, during daylight hours, even when it's on-time.

Yeah only ride North bound in the summer if you want to see the mountains between Northern California and Oregon! Its pretty scenic, the way to go is Northbound for the Ocean from Santa Barbara to SLO,the horseshoe curve and then into an agriculture area thats not all that great!Itll be dark when you get to San Jose and you wont see the Bay Area unless you ride Southbound to LAX!If you can try to ride both ways, and dont forget the PPC is a real bonus if you are in a sleeper!
