I saw on the news that heavy rains in the Atlanta area have washed out a Norfolk Southern line. I also see the Crescent of the 20th and 21st are showing service disruption. Anyone have details?
NS tracks west/south of Atlanta are washed out in several places. The southbound train was terminated in ATL and passengers bussed to NOL. Don't know if this will continue, but ATL is under severe flood problems.

How can they bus the pax if the roads are flooded  ?

Simple - the tracks are flooded and washed out, not the roads. There are plenty of streets and roads closed in the counties around ATL, but the major highways continue to be open. All that may change however since the rain continues.

Yep.

19(20) terminated at ATL this morning and will turn for 20(21). Passengers are being bussed between ATL and NOL. I don't know what route they're taking, though.

NS is reporting the track should be restored the afternoon of Tuesday, 9/22. So 19(21) will terminate at ATL and 20(22) will also be cancelled out of NOL (pax being bussed again).

I would think theyd use Interstate Highways as much as possible? When a bustitution happens what do they do for sleeper pax meals, does the bus pull into a KFC or Mickey Ds or do they have box lunches/breakfasts like on #27 & #28 and #22??

Thanks for that Raffi. We're taking No. 20 out of Birmingham on 9/24 enroute San Francisco.

In my one experience (busstitution from DEN to GSC due to a rockslide), they stopped at a rest stop (Subway, MCD's, etc) and everyone was on their own for payment. I later got the sleeper portion of my trip for that stretch refunded.

Thanks Rafi, we appreciate all the good info from you as opposed to what we "heard/think"/read on the net" etc. I do remember when the Crescent hit an idiot in a pickup one night in North Carolina and the OBS crew went across the road and brought back Pizzas and KFC for the pax while we sat for hours while Andy and Barney conducted an investigation! (Train 1!!! Truck --$5,000!!!!it was an older wood hauler!!)

Crescent was parked at the Atlanta platform turned NB as of 15:50 or so local time today. I guess if there's no NS traffic, there's no point keeping the mains free as it wasn't pulled into that old steel siding they've typically used due to truncations. Though from what I understand, the line northbound is fine so there goes that theory <_<

It was still sitting on the northbound track about 6 p.m tonight ,about thirty minutes ago. I walked home from MARTA Arts Center Station since MARTA is screwed up also. Lots of traffic lights out, etc. And all this on my 65th birthday! Imagine that!

A lot depends on the circumstances of the need for the bustitution, how long the ride is, and where does it fall time wise with regard to meal times.

For my one experience, we were bused from Albuquerque to Gallop, NM due to BNSF putting one of it's double stacks on the ground just west of ABQ. Since we were traveling over the dinner period, and probably in part because Amtrak had plenty of warning (we knew on the train by about 10 AM that we were going to be bused), everyone boarding the buses was given a boxed dinner and drink to eat. It was just a sandwich, with chips, and some kind of desert, but at least it was something.

At least they haven't turned out the lights on you yet.

Of course if they do that, then those birthday candles would come in handy.

Soggy birthday cake is no fun, no fun at all... :(

Happy birthday once again Bill.

...I'll take the cake.(H!B!)You can have the water. It's miserable around Atlanta and the crests (record- breaking) will follow, rolling south. If you have to be on the streets of this region, make sure you have several alternative routes lined up and lots of time and rain gear. Having spent hours today pushing the water out of my basement, I'm sleeping lite tonight, waiting for the passage of storms and more slogging. Rain is expected for most of this week with soils already saturated.

In the Bay Area (Concord, CA, to be exact) we're not having any flooding problems. The high today was officially 97, with 101 forecast for tomorrow (the first day of fall). It should start to cool, with highs down into the upper 80s by Thursday. Lows are expected to be in the upper 50s to low 60s.

What does that have to do with the Crescent's territory? 17 counties in Georgia have been declared in a state of emergency and include some in the Crescent's path.

Fortunately, my neighborhood is above the flood plain but most of us have basement flooding.

I'm just saying it isn't raining everywhere.

We don't have to worry about basement flooding here. Of course, we don't have a basement, and I don't know of anyone who does.

I suppose if it gets too hot, though, rails could get dislocated from excessive expansion. AFAIK, however, that hasn't happened or caused any disruptions.

If there is a service disruption is being bussed the only option?

Am I right in thinking that it depends where you are when the disruption happens? (and if there is space available)

For example, if you were holding seats on 20 from NOL-WAS, do they at least offer the possibility to take the CONO to CHI and then on to WAS, or is the only possibility to go Greyhound?

You can rebook, pay, get credit for your old tickets, but sleepers arent always available and the rail fare will be more since its two nights vs. one, the bustitution pretty much sucks and if it keeps raining that might be out too! Check it out on-line, I havent done the math but it IS more $$$!!!

Can anyone point me to the best place to find information about the Crescent route outages, delays, etc. (as discussed above)? I can't seem to find anything on the Amtrak website. Thx.

This thread might be your best hope. :)

Flooding

Due to continuing heavy rains in the Southeast causing flooding and resulting washouts, Norfolk Southern has discontinued operations between Birmingham and Atlanta and between Chattanooga and Atlanta. Traffic in these two corridors will be impacted by 24 to 48 hours. Norfolk Southern is working to restore service in these corridors as the rains and flooding recede.

I do not know the answer to your question, but note you refer to Greyhound. All this talk about buses does not necessarily mean Greyhound, either regularly scheduled or spare bus equipment.

When I encountered a bustitution recently, between Anniston, Ala and Atlanta, it was not a Greyhound at all. It was a bus which belonged to some kind of singing group. They brought it to the train station in Anniston and it took us straight to the train station in Atlanta, I-20 all the way.

Well, Bill, can you carry a tune!
