Questions about the Lincoln - Denver, Denver - Lincoln run

Thanks, both of you. That answers it well. To figure the actual travel time would you subtract the pad time, or is that just the time offset between 5 and 6 so that Denver can get ready for the arrive of #5? I wonder how the equipment fares in those harsh conditions. At Galesburg I noticed a...

Interesting. Do the carded numbers refer to run time?

Questions about the Lincoln - Denver, Denver - Lincoln run

On the CZ, I believe there are crew changes in Denver, Lincoln, and Ottumwa on the way to Chicago. The toughest one, I would think, would be the stretch from Denver to Lincoln (and back). It's late at night, it's really desolate, and it's a bumpy ride. I rode it earlier this week. It was...

    Rockies climb throttle position question

Also, what do they mean by 400 amps? How does that translate to throttle position and engine power? I understand the basics of electricity, traction motors, tractive effort, etc., but not this. Thanks.

    Rockies climb throttle position question

They seems to always climb out of the cab at that location as it is the only real stop between Denver and Glenwood Springs. I've talked to them before.

    Rockies climb throttle position question

Update: I asked the engineer up in Fraser, CO, and he said that he uses notches 5 and 6, although he pays the most attention to amps. He said he runs at around 400A.

Eastbound Grade Question - CZ Through Rockies

Thanks, all. There is a lot of good stuff here - love that drawing. Going through Glenwood Canyon and father east we're following the river, but it feels like we're on somewhat flat land. I know that can't be the case. I get the feeling the units were working hard to get the train up to the...

Eastbound Grade Question - CZ Through Rockies

Climbing out of Denver it's easy to see and feel the steep climb into the foothills. But leaving Glenwood Springs and heading to Denver it's a different story. It's not nearly as dramatic. It seems that it's a more gradual climb. Does anyone know where the steepest EB grade is on that route...

The Glenwood Springs, CO trip to Denver is now slower!

I used to book a sleeper for the Denver-Glenwood Spring trip and always thought it was really slow. The train used to leave GSC at around 12:20 PM and roll into Denver by around 5:45 or so. Now it leaves there at 11:42 AM and arrives at 6:27 PM, roughly 6 hours and 45 minutes. Wow. You can...

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024 H1

Not related, but does anyone have an idea of the throttle position of the lead locomotive at 80 MPH on relatively flat land?

Thanks for your responses. I should have mentioned that the car was in the middle of the consist, and I was on the upper level.
