One another board I follow, which shall remain nameless, there was some interesting, if unconfirmed, information about the choppers origin....
They probably need to stay in the game at least as far as bidding since 1) there might be cases with no for-profit bidders and hence no service at all 2) multiple bids required - also resulting in no service 3) off chance they might be the preferred bidder and 4) keeps private bidders on their toes.
Back in the days when large companies had in-house travel agents to arrange travel for employees (and they would sometimes handle private vacation travel for them - or at least advise) the agent at my fathers office said she and her family preferred to do LD travel by train and would arrive more...
Those renderings are gorgeous to the point of being Japanese luxury/fantasy train fantastic. Even the European land cruise trains are all old school traditional that I can think of (suddenly have picture of 007 on train with Jaws attacking him and, I think, agent XXX, in a very chic and snazzy...
Another option might be to fly to DC and board the train there as suggested above - there should be plentiful flights to that area (Dulles/BWI/etc) from the UK. Better connections in some ways, to Amtrak there, than in NYC.
Also, much as I encourage you to stop and spend money (LOTS OF MONEY)...

I've been up there in winter - it's pretty wild. My dad and I skied up a valley just south/east of the station at Finse on the uphill sides of the tracks back in like '86.
