Last year, Andy Byford—the transportation executive who earned the nickname ’Train Daddy’ while managing New York City’s subways—became Amtrak’s Senior Vice President for High-Speed Rail Development Programs. Amtrak has also begun working with Texas Central on the proposed high-speed line linking Dallas and Houston, and it has work underway to improve Acela service between Washington, DC and Boston. In this online talk, we’ll hear from Andy Byford about Amtrak’s plans and the best possibilities for faster, more frequent American train service.

Speaker bio: Andy Byford is a transport professional whose career has spanned three continents over three decades. Today, he is leading Amtrak’s efforts to support and expand high-speed rail’s rile in the U.S. passenger rail network.

Andy joined London Underground in 1989 as a uniformed Station Foreman and has gone on to lead the largest transit systems in the United States, Canada and the UK, as well as running day-to-day operations on Australia’s busiest network.

This unique achievement has given Andy a rare global perspective of transport operations, finances and politics and will stand him in good stead in his current role, leading the identification and delivery of new high-speed rail corridors for Amtrak in the US.

Andy grew up in Plymouth and is a graduate of the University of Leicester.
