    Best CHI-NYP route

Both the Broadway Limited and the 20th Century Limited charged an extra fare for the limited stop schedule that had to be refunded if the schedule was not maintained which was another reason to run on time.

    Cary-Raleigh Track Ownership

I changed twice in Cary when I traveled from Jacksonville,FL to Charlotte, NC and vv. You used to change in Raleigh, but Cary is a much nicer station with more room. They have a nice snack bar which sells a variety of food. It is also a hub for the local transit, but is a separate building...

OH I Wish There Was a Shortcut to Atlanta!

As someone who lived in Atlanta for 8 years and frequented ATL for business travel, I wished many times there was a high speed rail alternative from Atlanta to other cities in the Southeast. I have been stuck at ATL when it pure gridlock with planes waiting on the tarmac for gates that weren't...

    Best CHI-NYP route

At one time, there were 5 Railroads offering through trains from New York to Chicago; 1) Pennsylvania Railroad via Pittsburgh and Fort Wayne (shortest route but higher terrain) 2) New York Central System two routes via Buffalo and Cleveland (used by Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited now) and via...

    A new Super Chief

I traveled on business for many years. Unfortunately except on a few routes, Amtrak is not set up for business travel. Business Travel works on the Northeast Corridor, the Surfliner route, The Capitol Corridor and maybe some Midwestern corridors. I have used the Crescent from Washington to...

Passenger train ads/photos from the good old days

Thanks for sharing the great pictures. It brings back memories of train travel in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Where are all the dining cars going?

They are probably going to the scrap yard as they have many many miles on them.

OH I Wish There Was a Shortcut to Atlanta!

Up until April 30, 1971, Central of Georgia ran a very convenient train between Atlanta and Savanah and vv. The eastbound train departed Atlanta at 6PM and arrived in Savannah at midnight. The westbound train left Savannah in the early morning and arrived Atlanta in the early afternoon. It...

    Ranking Long Distance Amtrak Trains

Espee had a number of Long Distance trains that were bad such as #39 and #40 former Imperial Chicago to Los Angeles via Rock Island to Tucumcari, NM and Espee the rest of the way with coaches only and the former Cherokee Imperial with through coaches only from Memphis to Los Angeles again Rock...

    orlando or jacksonville

Jacksonville is the place to get off for St. Augustine. The area around the Jacksonville Amtrak station is safe. The station is located in a Railroad Yard. You can probably get a rental car company to pick you up. I have left my car at the Amtrak Station in Jacksonville for a week or so at a...

What should we do with more equipment?

It's nice to dream about restoring passenger train service to routes that used to have service, but unless there is funding new long distance trains are not going to happen. I think there will be more state supported routes and private investment routes such as Brightline and Texas Central. If...

    Pre Paid Meals Vouchers

The Santa Fe and Union Pacific offered "meal tickets" that included all meals on their western trains. For example, I have a Super Chief Meal Ticket that was good for 5 meals on the Chicago to Los Angles trip. It included anything on the menu at each meal except the Steak Dinner had a premium...

    motion sick on trains?

I rode the Floridian many times between various points in the route, I agree that the Indianapolis-Louisville section was horrible and could cause motion sickness. I remember eating breakfast in the Dining Car coming into Louisville when the car was tipping from side to side. The waiters...

    motion sick on trains?

I have had problems with motion sickness only on Long Distance buses when I was younger, but never trains or cruises. I prefer to ride facing forward, but even riding backwards on a train does not effect me like a bus has done.

Odd little detour, 21 (May 30)

As a boy back in the late 1950s or early 1960s, I remember being on the St. Louis Riverfront (before the Arch) and seeing B&O's National Limited crossing the Eads Bridge after stopping at Washington Station while GM&O's Abraham Lincoln passed underneath on the Riverfront line. Both trains had...

Amtrak running on All Aboard Florida?

At the present time, there would be no connection of rail line from CSX that Amtrak uses and the proposed new Brightline extension to OAI.

    Orlando Light Rail

If there is ever a city that needs improved Public Transportation, it's Orlando. As long as the light rail uses private right aways and does not mingle with Orlando's horrible traffic, it would work!

    Long Distance Train Comfort Opinions

Actually, I think Acela First Class is the most comfortable for daytime travel. I wish this type of service was more widely offered. It is similar to Parlor Car service offered by the private railroads.
