    Timetables/Flag Stops

All three points are spot on. PTC doesn’t know the train’s schedule nor the location of any station stops. PTC only cares if the train isn’t slowing or stopping when PTC thinks it should be.

    Virginia Service expansion

Probably because 151 and 66 are running against the VRE flow. While there is no direct traffic conflict now, there might be future VRE service slated for those slots. This is the way. It’s more efficient as previously T&E crews spent two nights in Roanoke as 171–>176 doesn’t work for hours of...

    Virginia Service expansion

95 no longer makes Woodbridge, Quantico or Ashland. On the Roanoke side, 151 and 66 do not stop at Burke Center. All crews spend one night in Roanoke and come back the following day.

Do any northeast regional trains from DC to NYP start in DC?

Track 22 will be a normal low level platform when finished.

Raleigh-long ramp and no escalator to platform

I believe a compounding factor was the Buy American provisions and that a domestic escalator was much more expensive than from a foreign manufacturer and that it wasn't budgeted accordingly. There is also a space to add an escalator next to the steps at the east entrance. I suspect this thread...

    Group sales discussion

Hmmm. Good point. Not sure how the section part tumble out of my brain, but there it is. Yep, it's red carbon on the Amtrak group tickets. The entire trip will be hand written on one form. I'm quite amused when I come across one which, admittedly, isn't very often.

    Group sales discussion

At least open section sleeper tickets are ARROW generated. Group tickets are still HAND WRITTEN paper tickets. Carbon paper and all!

Some entertainment from the Blue Book

There was a whole "Get-A-Grip" campaign right before COVID. Handed out little lapel pins with a logo to put on lanyards. It was targeted at reducing minor passenger injuries caused by falls due to train movement. Of course, you could reduce a lot of sudden, unexpected train movement with better...

    Virginia Service expansion

This is currently known as the NS Whitethorne District. It was originally the Virginian Railway prior to merging into the Norfolk and Western in 1959. If you look at Salem, VA, you'll see where the two different lines run parallel for a bit. The Whitethorne District is the southern most of the...

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

Rumor going around is the consist plan for the new service will be four Amfleet I coaches and a split-club for the cafe and business seating. No baggage car. The sets will be captive to BOS--NPN--NYP--RNK--BOS This is going to make for some miserably full trains, especially on corridor.

Question: is it possible to take Amtrak between Tampa and Lakeland?

Maybe there should be a timetable dedicated to Lakeland-Tampa-Lakeland service just to have enough room for all the caveats. 😅

Question: is it possible to take Amtrak between Tampa and Lakeland?

    1) There are two distinct station codes. LAK is for all service to/from north of Lakeland. LKL is for all service to/from south of Lakeland. Part of this is rooted in an Arrow limitation. A train number cannot be scheduled to stop at the same station more than once per calendar day. Hence why...

L' Enfant Plaza - flag stop?

Adding a new station stop, flag or regular, will require new construction. New construction is expensive. Can't just slap down a 20 foot patch of asphalt with an Amtrak sigh by a road crossing and call it a flag stop. Any existing flag stops still must be brought up to ADA standards, it's just a...

L' Enfant Plaza - flag stop?

That is not a valid comparison. Stopping randomly in the middle of the wilderness to pick up hikers/off-gridders walking out of the woods is not the same as a flag stop in the middle of civilized downtown Oakridge, OR.

L' Enfant Plaza - flag stop?

Flag stops in small towns isn't going to happen. You'd still have to have a proper ADA platform. Not going to happen for a location with ridership so low the train only stops on demand. Amtrak is still working to get proper ADA-compliant platforms at all the regular station stops.

    Virginia Service expansion

The Night Owl originated in WAS and departed around 10:10 PM, so being available for boarding at 9:30 PM wasn't a huge effort. The whole train would be spotted and ready. Boarding a standalone sleeper early in WAS could be done, but I'm not sure the benefit of boarding 30 minutes before...

    Virginia Service expansion

Upgrading the platform used by the Cardinal is in the works. I have no idea what the schedule is, but it is definitely an active project. The platform on the NS side for the Crescent and Regional trains is pretty good. Just needs better lighting, particularly under the Main St. bridge. The...

    Redemption Email

Received three redemption e-mails here too. Logged in and saw no suspicious activity in the transaction history. I suspect the phone lines will be busy tomorrow.

    Changes to Capitol Limited/Texas Eagle

The requirements for an exterior and interior calendar day inspection are spelled out in 49 CFR 238 Subpart D. Equipment must be inspected once per calendar day or every 1,500 miles. A calendar day means any time from 0000-2359. So a car inspected at 0001 on Monday doesn’t need another...

How to Get Specific Consist Details?

There is one VL-I sleeper, 62043, painted in Phase III. That's probably what you saw. AFAIK, no VL-II sleepers have operated anywhere except the Silver Service. The Cardinal currently operates with two coaches, one Amfleet II Cafe, one VL-I sleeper and one VL-II bag/dorm car.
