Does the Crescent stop in Mobile, Alabama?

Going all the way in to New Orleans, is also about 2 hours from mobile, around 140 miles or so.

Who travels in the Sleeper Cars?

I'm in the business traveler category. Not afraid to fly, I'm Platinum on American, and A List Preferred with Companion Pass on Southwest. I fly a lot. I just sometimes justify the train. Now that I'm living in Birmingham, I often fly to NYC, PHL, or WAS, then train back. Sometimes I train both...

Chicago Travel Order - 14 day quarantine

I guess I didn’t get the memo. Chicago is pretty much open. Just saw this, but doesn’t seem like anyone else in Chicago has. Currently eating Beggars pizza, after getting off the Chief, transferring you the Capitol tonight. No signs. No checks, nothing. Just a little less city traffic.

Looking for docent training material - Diners, Classic Pullman, RPOs

The rail museum in Campo CA has an awesome indoor RPO car display, with video interviews of RPO workers describing their jobs, and what working the mail car was like. Might check with them. Great museum with a lot of stuff.

    SWC Timetable?

Since the local pizza place was closed, I ended up calling for delivery anyway. But can tell you, no one seems to care. Outside the train, masks were nearly non-existent, and half the train crew went to the market-as is usual.

    SWC Timetable?

Thanks-yesterday that was linking to a message about Covid and reduced schedules, couldn’t get to the actual timetables....looks like they fixed it.

    SWC Timetable?

Mostly just concerned with ABQ. If early enough I’ll grab lunch and walk over to the market and buy some decent wine, cheese, crackers, pickles, etc, they have quite a good selection. Saves me from the flex dining mess. Didn’t have time before boarding in LA.

    SWC Timetable?

Just pulled out of LA on the Chief. I like to check for progress against the timetable on occasion, but right now all the timetable pages on Amtrak.com go to the Covid/service suspension message. Anyone have the SWC timetable you can post for me? Thanks!

Cross country travel: are there any quarantines affecting train travel

Whats the onboard experience right now? I needed a break, and a bit of sequestration to get some work done, so on a whim, booked a flight to LA next week, to return to Birmingham on the Chief, Cap, and Crescent. Are things open downtown LA/CHI/WAS?

How do feel about riding "Coach" ?

Well, it's no longer First Class, that's for sure. But I only do coach on corridor day trains, on long distance trains, even for day trips, I book a sleeper generally for anything over 4 hours. Overnight, I will have a sleeper, or I will fly. I have no desire to do overnights in coach, ever...

    CHI-LAX Southwest Chief

This wasn't the H room. This was the Family room. Roughly the same size, but the Family room, designed to sleep 2 adults and two smaller children, has the same upper and lower couch and bunks as a Bedroom (which I like, the larger lower berth), across the car, with two child bunks (something...

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

I'm sure that China's biological warfare center is in Wuhan, is just a coincidence. Right?

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

I'm much more concerned about bed bugs, and the flu. Just booked a flight Birmingham to Chicago, returning via the Capitol and Crescent.

    Help me understand railway signals

Right-I get that. I understand signals quite well. But it’s not uncommon to put two trains or more, into an absolute block when traffic backs up for some reason. The first enters in signal indication and stops at the next absolute, and following trains can be talked by the absolute stop signal...

Rare Milage in LA, then LAX-DAL 2/5/2020

Finished up work, fought the LA traffic (how does anyone live here???? Seriously, traffic at 7 PM going INTO the city?????) and dropped the rental car and bags off at the station. We’re to grab a bite and a beer or 5, before boarding. Have been in and out of here a dozen times, and never made...

Rare Milage in LA, then LAX-DAL 2/5/2020

Came out to LA on business, on the Southwest Chief, leaving tonight following the conference on the Texas Eagle. But had a surprise trip, the meeting included a 2 hour+ rail trip on the Alameda Coridor, and the Port of Long Beach/Port of LA on a couple of private business cars. Was an amazing...

    Cimarron River on California Zephyr

I got a ride between Warrensburg MO and KC and back on that when I was young, back in 1988 or so. Dad was stationed at White,an AFB, and the owner at the time, was a flight surgeon there. He hooked us up with a ride. Was very cool, back then we could stand on the vestibule with the windows open...

A different approach to dining (VIA)

If you’re in sleeper plus class, you can request vegetarian meals on the Canadian, as long as you make the request 10 days before departure. I have never done it, but I would think the menu is what it is, probably won’t have much say. If you can’t or won’t eat off the regular menu, or the...

CHI to ABQ on the Southwest Chief

And if you have time, before boarding there, visit Pierponts steakhouse. Whenever I’m there and boarding a train West, I have dinner there. It’s amazing. I believe it’s in what used to be the old Fred Harvey restarting space. Their bar alone, is impressive. Requires a rolling ladder to access...
