Caltrain starting public electric service on August 11, 2024

3 are expected to stay, I saw 920 and 922 double heading this afternoon followed by 905 and 909 headed southbound with a cut of gallery cars. 920,21,22 along with the 6 mp36 are going to be staying around for gilory/salinas service

GRT needs to be rail+trail for Willits south, North fine try and make a trail though that terrible mess of slides.

the comets are still around 1 set is in LA as a special event set for the surfliner the other is still in the bay I'd perfer we use them for something better Nope, doing so would require a cafe car to be built, I'd like to see a half cafe, half business and a business car added but the only way...

Vending machines will be coming. So far I don't believe they've been installed yet so its just snack boxes like they used on comets.

DOJ Cites NS for Crescent Delays

Amtrak's now trying 2 routes, DOJ for the crescent hosted by NS and STB for sunset limited hosted by UP Amtrak has a clear case in both that the host railroads have delayed them due to freight trains getting higher priority

    California HSR

SP had offered it up, thats how LA metro and VCTC bought their segments | Focusing on just the SJ-LA segment this is estimating 8.5 hours vs the 10-11 it takes now. Alt 5 (likely at 90mph) or alt 7 were probably most likely given the state was investing in California and later Surfliner cars...

    California HSR

SP coast line which may have gotten bought by the state, SF/Oakland to LA and eventually to SD. Lots of realignment work along with likely ITCS would have been used.

    California HSR

SJ to gilroy it will be the UP line with some minor realignment work and with 3-4 tracks. The tunnels haven't changed for Pacheco Pass they've always been around that long. It is close to a base tunnel to meet the 200-250mph design speed. There are some sections its easier than others but...

    California HSR

The cheaper way would have been the 90s plan to run at 110mph down the coast. Had a bond measure not failed in 1994 that could have been a good test bed and creation of state capacity which then could have moved over to CAHSRA resulting in prop1A running earlier like was originally planned.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2024)

They have more than enough F59phi to run the San Joquins 8 sets. Even with spares they don't need all 12 for the route.

Looks like they haven't testing is happening now

    Public ownership of railroads

its might be on the table for some States or certain lines but I doubt we will see the feds asking to buy the sunset route or BNSFs southern transcon.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

Siemens has major capacity limitations and I can see amtrak wanting to diversify their fleet some, if the LD fleet was to use a modified venture truck and an issue was found in both having to pull their entire fleet for weeks or months would be bad.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

The state keeps talking about getting a bit fleet of new rolling stock. Will it be based on the LD fleet, completely unrelated or a bunch of hydrogen MUs time will tell.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2024)

They've got 2x the amount of slots they are using now with 6RT running but they have 12RT slots.

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

The track argument to me was a bit strange. Like yeah its going to need to become at least class 3 60mph track but BNSF will also benefit from being able to run trains at 40mph. and the special grant that they have access to really sounds like it just needs to be replaced with a short line...

Illini and Saluki won't be till CN is happy with crossing circuits being activated by lightweight trains

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2024)

It looks like CA is using 1 full comet set in addition to 2 venture sets. I don't know if all 3 have been out in 1 day or not.

    New route in Northern California

I know quite a few people who don't like the plan. There is a connector track which would allow all trains to run Sac Valley to Chico which decouples it from Valley rail and allows the trains to run more often while still offering a transfer to Valley rail at Natomas.
