Los Angeles Metrolink steps up to mitigate the I-10 closing

caltrans is extremely quick at emergency rebuilding, there isn't anyone to learn from. the plan is 3-5 weeks

Los Angeles Metrolink steps up to mitigate the I-10 closing

I'm aware but there needs to be more capacity on the line, fixing the segments on I-10 will be a challenge but near term everything east of El Monte can be double tracked. It wasn't allowed according to a press report this afternoon, the original lease holder was subleasing without approval and...

Los Angeles Metrolink steps up to mitigate the I-10 closing

I wish they'd use this as an opportunity like on Antalope Valley line in the 90s to expand service and infrastructure even more. The La Verne double track was in final design last year so lets get the Vultures and start construction existing single track is blank existing double track is green...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

They've been in caltrans hands for 3 years now its amtraks fault

Pioneer and three others coming back?

If it ran Denver to Seattle Via the overland route it would take ~33-36 hours meaning 4 sets would be needed. Which means amtraks needs to put 5 cars into service for every car that makes up the train assuming Amtrak can hold to a 80% reliability. So 5 baggage cars, 5 transition sleepers, 5...

Metrolink (Los Angeles) outage in December 2023

I find it a bit odd they don't pair up AV an SB and run that as a service. They would need to run across the river which means in the throat of UP yard but that should still allow a few round trips a day. As for Surfliner why not setup a temporary platform at Keller yard

Stadler Flirt Hydrogen MUs for Amtrak California

Socal Edison and others want to do that as well. It just doesn't make sense to do in warmer places. CA doesn't need natural gas outside of industrial uses given our climate. I the cost of these units was 20M each, thats about 1.5 times what a DMU and about double what a EMU would cost Mass...

Stadler Flirt Hydrogen MUs for Amtrak California

There was one push by a few LA politicians who wanted to take Prop1A money for local projects even though legally they can't. The units will likely be tested network wide on all amtrak california intercity routes and likely some region trains as well because CalSTA and Caltrans really want these...

Stadler Flirt Hydrogen MUs for Amtrak California

No these will bee tested state wide, calsta and caltrans really want it to work so they don't have to wire up

Stadler Flirt Hydrogen MUs for Amtrak California

decarbonizing should not be our focus, it is far better to mode shift to diesel rail than to focus on making what service we run zero emissions. Most hydrogen is not zero carbon and is made from natural gas, the stuff that is made from water eats up 3x the amount of electricity as wires alone would.

Stadler Flirt Hydrogen MUs for Amtrak California

I just hope the hydrogen sucks and so in a few years when CalSTA and Caltrans grow a brain we can just remove the hydrogen power car and make them EMUs.

    Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2021 - 1Q 2024)

I would expect they get tested to 125mph unless the state and midwest decided that isn't worth doing in which case they'll be tested for 110mph.

    Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2021 - 1Q 2024)

you don't want the AC and all the lighting getting shutoff after every train stop.

Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2023 Q4

I read it as they ordered another 10 car so they are getting 30 more in total to make 10 7 car trains.

Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2023 Q4

80% is pretty common spare ratio for coaches but its normally pushing it for locos. But if you do preventative maintenance it can totally work.

Interesting Story about Transition Sleepers on LD Routes

That seems slightly odd given they've only got 116 sleepers and most trains were running with 2 or 3 per train.

Interesting Story about Transition Sleepers on LD Routes

There should be close to enough, 47 were made while 50 lounge cars were. Amtrak still has 43 on their roster

    Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2018 - 1Q 2024)

Its a pretty common compensation tool instead of giving straight cash for example SBB RABe 514 fleet was late and had issues or Septa getting a ALP-44 for the N5 train issues. They could have done it when they brought out the Acela they already had a team put together.

    Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2018 - 1Q 2024)

on 12 not 6 trainsets, and in some cases they've made nearly all the cars like 22/28 cafe cars I really hope alstom as a result is forced to provide a few extra trains, longer and better support plus pay for the cost to maintain the legacy fleet longer The constant tension wire replacement has...

    Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2018 - 1Q 2024)

Its been a dumpster fire for a long time now, we just know the full extent the best way to understand how the trucks are interacting and will over the entire lifespan of components being worn is via computer modelling. FRA requires it, they knew they had to do it from the start and have...
