    ABB Scandi/Adtranz/Bombardier IC3 Flex discussion

Too late: Danish built IC3 Flexliner rolling through Sturtevant, WI in 1997.

Agreed especially if the Lounge is going to be restricted to First Class Sleeper passengers.

Sure thing. Let's all think about this.

I was thinking about the coach cafe' design a bit. Amtrak is designing an exciting new coach cafe' car with huge windows and roof skylights. It will be a bright cheery space for socializing, grabbing a bite to eat or enjoying a beverage or two. A really welcoming space to meet fellow...

That's the way I like it and with those big windows a bed with a view :)

Thanks for these diagrams. It is great to see what Amtrak has in mind. A couple of quick thoughts: My wife and I have spent many a night in a Viewliner roomette and the one thing that we needed was a bit more floor space. It is a bit tough for two people to maneuver around in that small a...

Insiders not liking Superliners, which are so much more efficient than single levels, makes no sense.

No one has said it yet, but those coach seats don't look all that comfortable for a long distance train.

I don't expect good old fashion dome cars. It's not even possible with the proposed Superliner-style bilevel design. The closest thing is the Holland America McKinley Explorer but that's possible only because you can pass through on the lower level. I was just showing that the original dome...

Yup. It's back to the future:

Yes this is why they may have them on more cars than just the lounges. As we discussed before, picture those full height windows in the bedrooms instead of the two separate windows to allow upper berth viewing and a skylight to view the stars at night. Now a while ago I suggested that they...

All that glass with the "skylights" makes me smile :) I think Amtrak might just be providing that "experiential" experience promised a while ago.

I think Talgo deserves another chance but probably has a bad taste in their mouths and won't. What about CRRC? They have always seemed eager to grow their business here.

There are transparent luggage racks. I know the luggage would block most of the view however.

But Amtrak doesn't have shades ;) Now reaching way back into my memory brain cells, and I really don't know if I am right about this, but I kind of remember the original Viewliners had internal shades on the interior windows. They proved to be problematic so the curtains were added. Does...

Thanks for the feedback. Maybe there are improved versions. Maybe airplane windows are different from building or train "Smart Glass"? Certainly may be a good option for the Skylights which are probably going to be difficult to shade as required in the specs. Just food for thought.

Actually that has been reversed relatively recently for western trains. Sleepers on the rear offer a quieter ride. Baggage cars now on the rear supposedly improve the ride for the sleepers by reducing fishtailing. Amtrak went this way several years ago with the Florida trains and I do believe...

Can you elaborate a bit? Bombardier Transportation has intelligent on-blur windows in the Bombardier Innovia APM 100 operating on Singapore's Bukit Panjang LRT line, to prevent passengers from peering into apartments while the train is moving[21] and is planning to offer windows using smart...

One thing I want to add is that Amtrak should consider "Smart Glass" for the windows. That would make a very modern clean look without the hassle of curtains or shades which can be a hassle in many ways. This would be especially great for the "Sky Lights"...
