Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Just a couple more thoughts: 1 - Doesn't it look like there is enough space for a wheelchair to pass through the existing Lounge cars? I'd like to see the measurements here. Different seating that doesn't swivel could be used. Wheelchairs can pass through the Brightline cars that have four...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Each floor has approximately 6 1/2 feet of headroom. It really doesn't matter if the rooms have an upper bunk or not, you really can't make one level any lower to make the other one higher. There just isn't enough room to play with. I agree with you about a wider lower bed for two vs. upper...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

If you look at the diagrams closely, you can see that the ADA bathrooms seem to show the 60" turning circle inside the orange-colored restrooms. Since the bathrooms and bedroom are the same width that would indicate that those bathrooms are wide enough to comply with ADA turning regulations...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I want to add: Although it isn't clear from the diagrams but actually just might be the case, Amtrak should go back to a separate bathroom/shower in the ADA room like in the Viewliner I, so that the rooms can be sold as a spacious double bedroom to non-ADA passengers. This would help with...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I don't think you should count the lounge but even so they could put four ADA rooms in car #6. They need to make the lounge upper level a full-length lounge. I don't know the planned passenger count but it would appear to be pretty high.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Those are pretty clever designs on Amtrak's part. I think bilevel makes more sense and will probably be the way to go. We need to study the designs more closely but some interesting notes include the changes in the stair design (straight and L shaped) and the fact that all seating in the...

    Superliner Baggage Cars?

This is an old thread but thinking about recent Long Distance replacement discussions I was thinking that a new (or even rebuilt) bilevel Baggage/Dorm might be a good solution. Unlike the existing Superliner Baggage/Coach, this car would have roomettes, bathrooms, showers and maybe a small...

    Long Distance Train Consists rearranged

There are several reports on various Internet sites that Amtrak has recently rearranged some if not all Western Long Distance Trains similarly to the Eastern ones where the coaches have been moved upfront and the sleepers to the rear. There are transition dorms on the rear but unlike Eastern...

    Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2021 - 1Q 2024)

That is impressive I must say. The cup holders look a bit shallow but maybe not. Is VIA not having the same issues with the new Siemen's Chargers as Amtrak is? Why is that?

Miami Intermodal Center at Miami International Airport

How about "Miami International Airport Intermodal Terminal" or "MIA Intermodal" for short?

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Might be 25 seats if they went with just one vestibule.

Well some quick checking shows Brightline aisles are 32 inches wide and wheelchair assessable.

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Reading this, it certainly makes sense to standardize the new fleet but I see no reason that a 14'6" low-level bilevel food service/lounge car couldn't be included in the mix. On the food service car the upper level would have dome windows and serve as the dining area and the lower level would...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

The low-level bilevels that fit in NYP have 6'6" of headroom on each level. That would still work. Now using some visualization, full height double roomettes could be placed on one mid-level end. Restrooms and shower on the other end maybe?

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Wasn't this a public bid? Is it possible to find this info somewhere?

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Going back to the last car bid for the ill-fated bilevels, there were five bidders: Alstom, Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), Kawasaki, Siemens, and Sumitomo. As we all know Sumitomo won the bid and origianally contracted Nippon Sharyo to build the cars (or at least attempt to)...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Ah, but that brings up the wonderful potential of running it north to New Jersey which would be great for a lot of people. Amtrak might need some new low-profile auto-carriers of course. On the other hand, CSX might just have cleared their entire route from Florida to New Jersey for double...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Interesting question. Does the schedule matter to ticket prices? Well a quick check on the westbound trains, which run about an hour part (sometimes right on each others markers) shows this: Departure CLE CHI Compare Fare Types 29Capitol Limited DEPARTS 2:59a 10% full > 6h 46m ARRIVES 8:45a...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Seems logical. More rooms would mean lower prices but . . . Here is a little "study" I did on another website comparing a Superliner train and a Viewliner train based on just that concept: I know there has been lots of discussion about Superliner replacement especially about if Amtrak...
