Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Interesting read. Maybe a Rotem car variation could be the next Superliner.

Maybe a good reason to eventually equip the Auto Train with Ultradomes? No other way to increase capacity with a car length limit.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Read that a little differently. This is a day train and there are no sleeper rooms. It mentions a car just for ADA passengers. I am thinking access to their "reserved room" means a wheelchair space in that car. Looking at the video the most logical place for that "room" would be at one end...

Looks like the wheelchair access is pretty limited actually. Found this statement: The car dedicated to people in wheelchairs has several innovations. Work is continuing with the associations to finalize the technical adjustments and the choice of signage. I think you are over-reading this...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Wow! It's like looking into the future :)

Ambitious restoration and transformation in the Chicago area

Some wishful food for thought: Chicago Union Station is unique in that it was built with separate passenger and baggage platforms on opposite sides of the train. There are proposals to rebuild Chicago's platforms to eliminate the unused baggage platforms and move the tracks to that area so...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

I think most people know that. No reason the concept can't be made by another manufacturer. https://www.railvolution.net/news/new-carriages-for-rocky-mountaineer-delivered

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

A better option would probably be an Ultradome based fleet but there are apparently clearance problems with them in Chicago. May be fixable may be not?

Can you elaborate on this a bit or find a link to this accident and reasoning?

Post ADA but pre crumble-zone? The Viewliners original design had the two last roomettes right up against the rear bulkhead. The Viewliner II has the bathrooms and shower back there. We have had many discussions on the new Amtrak Venture cars and how the crumple zones take up a lot of space...

If you look at the photo below you will see that this not only would provide visual openess it would actually add several inches of additional headroom. Probably not going to provide sit-up room but a lot better than the way it is now.

You realize that that would pretty much take the same space as the existing bedrooms? You would just lose the bathroom making it less desirable.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I do the same. When traveling with my wife I give her the "more desirable" lower bed of course :) I made a very wishful proposal a while ago when I suggested that if the Superliners were rehabbed it would be really cool to put Sightseer Lounge upper windows in the sleepers so that the rather...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Yes my experience was on the CP Atlantic a long time ago overnight across Maine. If I remember correctly you could buy the entire section for complete privacy. That way you could set it up with the bed above and seats below or a couple could each sleep individually on two beds. You could also...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

It's all in the design. Put a big window on the outer wall and have glass panels and doors on the aisle like on a roomette and it would make it feel very open. Darkening glass for night privacy and ambient lighting would make it downright cozy at night. My most recent Amtrak trip was on the...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Delta fought hard for the Delta One Mini-Suites because the FAA didn't want doors on them. That was not allowed up to that point. I believe the ability to see in was a compromise. Amtrak would have no problem extending the walls and doors up to the ceiling.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

But how are they structurally? I visited the Bombardier factory in Barre while they were being built and the whole idea of the modular system was that the car could be easily reconfigured by exchanging modules when they were going to be rebuilt. I am always impressed when I see a Superliner...
