    Amtrak Coach discussion

I'm assuming you're taking the Empire Builder from Chicago to Portland, then Coast Starlight from Portland to Eugene. Both trains use Superliner coaches, which all face the same direction. If your Portland-to-Eugene is Cascades, I'm not sure. If you end up in a sleeper, some people recommend...

    California HSR

https://caltrain-hsr.blogspot.com/2024/06/diridon-delusions.html Clem from the renowned Caltrain-HSR Compatibility Blog made a new post, this one about Diridon Station alternatives being proposed. Some nice insight in how alternatives can be used to shape what might be a foregone conclusion by...

Still a better photoshop job than this one.

Capitol Corridor rerouting in the Bay area (Planned for 2030)

I'm also skeptical about Ardenwood becoming a major transfer hub, and am more disappointed that Newark junction wasn't selected as the station. That could allow a future Dumbarton Rail Corridor (when it gets funded in the next century) to connect Caltrain, CC, and ACE services up to...

New member with questions re first LD Amtrak trip in September

A real shame, I was hoping to have both VL-1 and VL-2 experiences in the same year 😭. Makes me wonder again how hard it'd be for Amtrak IT to show what equipment you're scheduled to be on. Even if they change last-minute, I'd like to know (my airline apps show what aircraft). I thought it...

New member with questions re first LD Amtrak trip in September

I was just on the Cardinal 50 a little over a week ago, thought I could add a data point: My consist had one VL-1 sleeper (car 5000) and one VL-2 bag/dorm. Don't remember the VL-2's car number, but sounds like 5009 was probably it. Also just booked a LSL 49 last week and called 1-800-USA-RAIL...

Amtrak long distance trains - Power Socket types

You're right, definitely has the horizontal 20A slot. Makes me wonder just how much a sleeper car can take though... maybe someone more experienced can chime in.

Amtrak long distance trains - Power Socket types

Yep, definitely will work. Not sure what the recessed function was, but it is interesting.

Amtrak long distance trains - Power Socket types

All the roomettes and coaches I've seen on long-distance trains have the NEMA 5-15 socket: two flat slots and a circular hole for ground. You should be fine with what you have, but you can always send a photo to check. Here's a zoom-in of a Viewliner I power outlet I was in last week.

Chicago South Shore & South Bend (NICTD) discussion (2023-2024)

I'm typing away aboard the SSL right now. You can see the road lane they reduced to make way for double track, as well as the new short wall to separate "street" running. Track on ballast too.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

I'm more interested in speculating what these new cars will be called. Ultraliner? MEGAliner? Superliner III?

@Lonestar2804 just dropped a new video on the Silver Star! Love the return of traditional dining.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

My favorite part of this is that segmentation of Coach to Business to First feels much clearer with this equipment. AFAIK business class doesn't exist on Amtrak LD currently, and this 2-1 vs 2-2 config seems nice. SoloSuites are a "first class coach" with sleeper class benefits, while the other...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

I got bored. Following the footsteps of @Paniolo Man, I kindly asked the Amtrak FOIA officer if we could have the original digital PDF of the specification for legible figures and images. She obliged and here it is! Nothing we don't know already, but now we can see the nice CAD mockups Amtrak...

Chicago South Shore & South Bend (NICTD) discussion (2023-2024)

I'm not an EE but also think the difference between the two probably don't matter. I was watching this HSR Alliance video and Rich Harnish said (51:55) Chargers convert from high voltage (25kV) AC to 1500VDC, then AC for the actual motors. Making CUS 1500VDC would enable electric running while...

Chicago Metra Electric District (MED) speed increases?

Seems like nothing I've said so far hasn't been discussed already 🙈. This is a great thread to dig into, thanks.

Chicago Metra Electric District (MED) speed increases?

I need some trivial topic to obsess over, otherwise what else can I do while we wait! 🫠

Chicago Metra Electric District (MED) speed increases?

Switching from CN Lakefront to NICTD makes sense. HSR Alliance's page shows connecting the two to be on the wishlist along with the St Charles Air Line renovation. Maybe it'll happen with the FY25 grant request. 🤞😂😔 I finally got around to listening to the full Sandhouse video and their Q&A...

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

I see. Makes sense, BART and Caltrain are facing similar situations, fiscal cliff and all.
