Austin to Store New Electric Buses for 1 Year

We have new electric buses in Nottingham. They seem to work well, the drivers say they are good to drive. Made in china. Photo taken outside my front door, which is quite handy for the free rides us old folks get!

My USA trip 2024... (part 1)

Part 3 We had a very enjoyable afternoon looking at Chicago architecture, with Tim being a knowledgeable and amusing “tour leader”. A few trips around the “Loop” on the trains were included, to view things above ground level. Left to right is Cal, Julie, and Tim. Chicago is one of my...

My USA trip 2024... (part 1)

Part 2 4th September. I woke up early, and went for a short pre-breakfast stroll. Surprisingly cool, but I enjoyed the walk in a nearby park. Back at the hostel, I was pleased to find self service breakfast was included. I got chatting to John, a gent from Albuquerque, of similar age...

My USA trip 2024... (part 1)

Having cancelled my previous trip to America due to catching Covid, I was looking forward to this visit, almost exactly a year later. It’s been an “interesting” year for me, as they say in China, but now we are finally approaching the starting block... Arriving in America as a foreign tourist...

    What should Amtrak change?

As I have advanced in years, I find myself as a member of the "it is what it is" club. Not expecting things to change (and, to a certain extent, not even good at dealing with change! ;) ) No need for Mystery Shoppers, train managers, etc, etc... Just get the top Amtrak CEO to read Amtrak...

Suggestions needed for international rail trip

I met a Brazilian older chap in one of the hostels in America on my recent trip. He was on a "world wide budget trip", and he also mentioned that Japan was not as expensive as he had heard...

I don't "know" for sure, but I would imagine the bus will leave at it's scheduled time?

Coast Starlight train 11 service disruption Nov 1

It is as well to remember that most here are enthusiastic amateurs, who can err at times. Not all of us are qualified to post in almost every single thread with authority...

    Grand Central Sanderson Station

We have Simon Calder, a well known travel writer here in the UK, who publishes tips once a week. This popped up today: " In Amtrak data analysed by MailOnline, it was revealed that Sanderson, an area in Terrell County, Texas, with a population of only around 700 people, received 247 passengers...

I believe the bars were a security feature, to stop "non ticketed people" from accessing the carriage at night etc, on loco hauled trains. The external vestibule doors are often "locked" from the inside at night too, to keep undesirables out... As India modernises train services, these door...

    Longtime watcher, short time member

Welcome! You couldn't have chosen a better train for your first long distance trip! It would be interesting to me if you can report back as to how the experience actually was, compared to your expectations from reading posts on this forum?

Be reassured that I am not completely mad, my left arm is curled around a metal post. ;) As you probably know, they don't even close the doors on these EMU's... Not too bad on this ride from Neral back into Mumbai, but pretty dodgy at rush hour, which I think they call "super dense crush load...

Man dies, 15 injured, after two trains collide in Wales

It seems as though that might be a major cause, as other lines in the area were operating at reduced speeds due to "slippery rails". (There was a similar train crash in the Salisbury area in October 2021)

Although you have booked a roomette, you can also spend time in the sight seer lounge, also called the observation car. This car has large viewing windows, and seats orientated to see out comfortably. There are some tables with conventional seating also. You will find the cafe / snack bar on the...
