Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

It’s hard to gauge the actual size of something from a diagram like that. Each of those bathrooms are objectively half the size of one Roomette, equating to 3’6” by about 3’4”. Seems large enough.

Taking my first trip: A bunch of questions

I’ve done four sleeper rides in the past three months, and they’ve always had water, ice, and juice. From what I’ve seen and heard, the East Coast trains tend to be better about that than the western trains.

Taking my first trip: A bunch of questions

When you board, there will already be two water bottles in your room, but if you need more, just walk over to the refreshment station near the end of the car. It will almost certainly have dozens of water bottles and a huge bag of ice, as well as coffee in the morning, and in most cases a few...

Taking my first trip: A bunch of questions

Each sleeper has its own SCA (Sleeping Car Attendant), and he/she is the only one who will be attending to you. When you board, the SCA will introduce their self and give you a full run down on how everything works. If you end up needing anything, there is a call button in each room, though I...

Taking my first trip: A bunch of questions

Bring it onboard and put it in the private storage cubby over the hallway. Whenever you wish. Most attendants will offer to turn down the room while you’re at dinner, but you can always just ask them to do it whenever you wish. It’s totally up to you. And the upper bunk is plenty sturdy, so...

    Amtrak FY 2020 Budget

A lot of things aren’t fair, but slashing the network in the manner that is being suggested makes things even less fair. And on the subject of things not being fair, wouldn’t you say that it’s not fair for someone who lives in a town served by 108 daily Amtrak trains to advocate for the death...

Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

If they were able to fit a toilet, sink, and two seats that fold into a bed, into every Roomette, I don’t see how it’s difficult at all to fit just two toilet modules in place of one Roomette. And every sleeper still has one Accessible Bedroom with a bathroom in it anyway, so I don’t see...

    Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2018 - 1Q 2024)

Thanks. I still feel like the statement “trains traveling upwards of 200 miles an hour” is warping the truth a bit. I mean, what even would the point be in them “tweaking” them enough to bring it up to 200, if they won’t be exceeding 160 in service anytime soon?

    New LD Locomotive Order Placed

What about it makes you say that they resemble those cars so closely? As far as I can tell from the rendering, these are just going to be some pretty standard low platform steps, and the only real distinguishing feature I can identify in this EuroCity photo is the trapezoidal shape, which I’m...

    Hidden City Fares on NEC?

That doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that NYP-WIL is $5 more expensive than NYP-WAS, though...

Two tickets, two segments, one train?

I recommend you look to see if there are any cheaper dates that would work for you, because La Junta to Chicago in a Roomette for two people can cost far less than $655.

New cancellations for March winter storms?

That seems like a drastic exaggeration and oversimplification. Basic measurements such as snow/rainfall, wind, and temperature, are objective, and as the climate changes, we are seeing many more notable storms.

Bus from Albany Amtrak to airport?

Thruway buses are Amtrak’s bus network, bridging the gaps in rail service. Amtrak sells the tickets, but the buses themselves are contracted out to separate operators. Most Thruway buses are exclusively for Amtrak passengers connecting to or from specific trains, and will always wait for...

Bus from Albany Amtrak to airport?

Looks like there are actually two daily Thruway busses serving Albany airport (one in each direction). There is #6491 at 5:30 PM from the airport to Rensselaer connecting to the (westbound) LSL, and there is #6244 departing Rensselaer at 3:35 PM, connecting from the eastbound LSL. Amtrak doesn’t...

Thank God they ditched the utterly horrific name “Avelia Liberty”.

    Sightseer Lounge Orientation

I guess since the Chief’s consist isn’t normally taken apart or rearranged at its termini, it would make sense that the cars are going to be oriented in a certain direction until some other circumstance causes them to be reoriented. Unfortunately, that consist next passes through Flagstaff on...

Points refund, using points on mobile app

You should get 80% of your points back, as there is a standard 10% fee and an additional “close in” fee applying. I’m not sure why those points haven’t posted yet, though. https://www.amtrakguestrewards.com/info/redemptionguidelines And the iOS app doesn’t allow points bookings, so I...
