32 hour trip - Bay Area to Eugene?

From here: So there will be a 10% penalty on what you paid so long as you modify it before the CS departs Eugene (if you don't modify it before then, you just forfeit the ticket). If the new price is lower than what you paid originally, there will be a 10% penalty on the amount returned back to...

Maine March Madness (Acela to Boston)

Great report! Thanks for sharing it with us, and many congrats on your retirement! :) Sorry to hear about your bad luck with your ticket back. I've had too many issues over the years with agents screwing up the dates of travel. Sometimes they just get it wrong when we're first booking it, and...

    dirty windows

I think the best solution to this dilemma is to just live in NYC, where you won't need or even want a car! :D

‘Southern Crescent’ - Last Run Souvenirs

So I guess it could either be considered an SP car in an Amtrak consist, or an Amtrak operated car in an SP consist. But either way, it's pretty different from the Maple Leaf.

Meeting in Springfield, MA regarding possible Massachusetts East-West Corridor

Not to mention the fact that Pittsfield station consists of just one side platform and track. Even if PIT wasn't in the middle of nowhere, that is pretty much the worst possible layout for any sort of terminus.

‘Southern Crescent’ - Last Run Souvenirs

Says 10-6 here (in the SLEEPING CARS section), and from everything I'm seeing it was an SP car, so...

‘Southern Crescent’ - Last Run Souvenirs

Yes, but with the ML, the physical train stays the same the whole way through. With the transcontinental sleeper, you had an SP 10-6 hooked up to Amtrak rolling stock for the 46 hour journey west of New Orleans. That’s very different.

‘Southern Crescent’ - Last Run Souvenirs

Wow, great pictures. Thank you so much for sharing!!! :) I didn’t realize Amtrak ever ran through-cars to any non-Amtrak trains. And looking at those menus really makes me realize just how much we’re missing now. Why couldn’t I be born 50 years ago???

Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited Consist from Los Angeles to Chicago

Also not wanting to bother an employee who is likely needed much more by other passengers.

Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited Consist from Los Angeles to Chicago

Probably the rail fan window, lack of foot traffic, and reduced noise due to being far from the engine.

The elusive Boston sleeper (March 4 -5, 2019?)

This Penn Station track diagram seems to indicate otherwise Sorry, got confused by the three directions out of NYP. I was just thinking that since the Empire Corridor comes from the north, and Boston is also north, that they would have to reverse. Sincerest apologies. Still, at least they...

    Pacific Surfliner recommendations

From everything I've heard, Business Class is 100% worth the premium on the Surfliners. Unlike coach, seats are reserved (meaning you are guaranteed one on that train), and have much more legroom. You also get access to the Metropolitan Lounge in LAX, and plenty of complimentary snacks and soft...

    Silver Star On-Time Performance

Here is #92's OTP out of Tampa over the past two months, and here is its OTP into Philly over the past two months. The last westbound Keystone is #671 at 9:35 PM. In those two months, the Star has missed that connection thrice, two of which were in the weekend. And those three all happened in...

The elusive Boston sleeper (March 4 -5, 2019?)

Fair enough. Does it make any difference that the ACS would attach to the opposite end of the train from the P32, which would allow them to detach one at the same time that they attach the other. I mean could that speed up the process enough, or is it just that any sort of coupling/uncoupling...

The elusive Boston sleeper (March 4 -5, 2019?)

I was thinking of them cutting the P32 in NYP and having an ACS-64 take it the rest of the way (and vice versa). And if they did start a BOS-ALB corridor, couldn't one of those trains just take the current slot? To be clear, I'm not suggesting that this makes more sense than what they're doing...

    No Id

Good plan. :) Is this your first time taking Amtrak (or taking it long distance)?

    No Id

Probably two non-photo IDs, one of which is government issued? ;)

    No Id

Yep, that would be enough, though I would feel somewhat terrified bringing those on a trip. Make sure you don't lose 'em! :)

The elusive Boston sleeper (March 4 -5, 2019?)

Yeah, I've always felt that the Boston section of the LSL is sort of a weird outlier service because it's the only single-level LD "train" that doesn't terminate in NYP. What I wonder is could it possibly make sense to stop splitting/combining the LSL, and instead just run the whole thing into...
