Insider.com and businessinsider.com stories about Amtrak trips

Fair enough. I still think a writer/blogger/whatever doesn’t deserve to be attacked when we address those types of issues/questions here every day. It’s still a double standard.

Insider.com and businessinsider.com stories about Amtrak trips

So it’s ok for members of this forum to complain about various things during their trip, but god forbid a reporter does it? Quite the double standard there.

Empire Builder #8 struck vehicle 11/10/21

I always feel the need to link this when people use the Liebeck case as an example of a frivolous lawsuit. https://www.caoc.org/?pg=facts

    Chicago

This is perfect. :) The beanies will be good if it's windy and cold, and the baseball caps will be good if it's sunny.

Amtrak potential service reduction due to staff shortage

Approximately 12,000 Americans died during the entirety of the H1N1 pandemic (2009 - 2010). Over 750,000 have died of Covid-19 so far. We exceeded the H1N1 death count by the first week of April 2020. It has nothing to do with social media and everything to do with severity.

Transport Companys' handling of Daylight Saving Time

What is everyone so pressed about? If a train holds for an hour, it still arrives at the next station on time due to the time change.

Plus sized first time overnight train ride

You don’t have to bring water. :) Just bring a container for it. There are spigots for drinking water located in every coach car. The taste can vary, so I usually bring one of those little squeeze bottles of Crystal Light.

    #48(30) joins the whack-a-vehicle party :(

We have issues with freights blocking the major, one-way, east/west corridors in Kalamazoo. Michigan Ave is four lanes heading east, and Kalamazoo Ave is four lanes heading west, so you can imagine the snarl. When the train is simply passing through, the wait isn't bad, but the trains sometimes...

    Emeryville

Regarding Alcatraz, if you haven't already booked your tickets, do it ASAP. In my experience, they sell out quickly. Every time I've gone, there's a packed "wait list" area, similar to a standby list at the airport. I highly recommend the night tour over the day tour. The ferry goes all the way...

Los Angeles and San Diego, no. They're both sunny and warm during winter. Did you mean San Francisco? If so, yes, there will be a difference. San Francisco will be a bit chilly (12-15 degrees Celsius) with the usual fog. For me, that's beautiful winter weather, but your mileage may vary. :)

Most interesting encounter(s) on a train

I tend to stick to myself, which my car attendant noticed during my trip on the CZ. I was also pretty melancholy about an impending breakup, which may have been obvious as well. He checked in on me pretty frequently but never pushed me to talk. While traveling through western Colorado, he...

Oops. I forgot about that bit when I posted. Oh well. Maybe it'll help others. :)

Plus sized first time overnight train ride

I'm a size 26 and carry most of my weight in my hips. I don't have any trouble with the coach seats on long-distance trains. There isn't a divider, though, so if your seatmate is also a bit heavy, you may end up rather close. They will usually try to pair women with other women, but I still...

    New flex meal menu (10/06/21)

I don't think you understand how customer service works. If someone calls and tells me their child cannot have dairy, I am more than happy to send them a list of frozen confections that do not contain dairy. If it bothers me that someone asked me for that information instead of simply telling...

    New flex meal menu (10/06/21)

Seriously. My company carries approximately 2000 ice cream products and 500 dairy products, and I can pull up a PDF of the ingredients and nutritional info for any item in about 30 seconds. Even though we distribute most of the ice cream rather than making it on site, we STILL have access to...

    First time Rider!

I've taken many trips as a single woman and have never felt unsafe while traveling in a room. Just keep your wits about you, as usual. Both trips (Emeryville to L.A. or Emeryville to Seattle) sound nice. It really depends on the type of scenery you prefer. Personally, I loved the Coast...

California Zephyr which direction is best

Westbound. You're guaranteed more scenery (unless the train is running ridiculously late). Eastbound is nice too, though. I did that trip in March 2015, and while I didn't get to see as much scenery, it was still a beautiful trip.

    Grand Canyon WMH overnight??

Oops. I should have clarified. It’s in Williams.

    Grand Canyon WMH overnight??

I’m staying at a wonderful Airbnb that is only a block from the Grand Canyon Railway station. It’s only $60/night and has a (free) washer/dryer. I’m not sure of your trip date or their availability. I’ll send you the link in a private message so you can check it out.

Amtrak has golden opportunity this summer

That’s not my point. You said Michigan doesn’t have commuters. You didn’t specify how long a traffic jam on 275, the Lodge, 696, or 94/23 through Ann Arbor had to be to qualify as “commuting”.
