Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

Perhaps I should clarify, although I think most people would understand what I meant in my post. By "light" I wasn't thinking of numbers. A salad with a few pieces of cold meat on top and a dessert is "light" (even if high-calorie) compared with say, a steak or steak and seafood dinner that...

Comparing treatment of pax w/disabilities: Amtrak vs Europe vs Japan

As far as passengers with disabilities, I can't compare Amtrak with other nations' trains, but my husband had mobility limitations, and we always received excellent service on Amtrak. As his mobility deteriorated, the service increased to include the use of a wheelchair lift when getting on and...

Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

It's not that the cold boxed meals are "bad" in themselves; it's that they are the only option for lunch and dinner. I'd probably choose one for one day's lunch, although the option of at least a burger would be nice. For the main meal of the day, they are very light fare, especially for more...

Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

I'd rather have a hot dinner or breakfast any day than an amenity kit, especially when I can't be confident I'll even get it. I doubt I'm alone in that. As Tricia said, things are so inconsistent that I'd be afraid not to bring my own toiletries anyway, which makes the kit superfluous. Also, I...

How is coach on the Capitol Limited Train

I don't know if you've made your trip yet, but there are more replies today so I'll share my experience. On my most recent coach trip on the Crescent from ATN to NOL with two friends, our car was literally almost empty, but the car attendant put a single passenger in the seat next to the third...

Joe Boardman questions current Amtrak's managements motives

From reading the entire article from the link, Boardman is certainly critical of the way things are currently being handled under Anderson. Is it usual for a former to be so critical of the current management? Regardless, his concerns lend credence to the concerns being expressed in several...

    Best Airport Amtrak Station connection?

Rail Freak, I need a GPS to get through Atlanta's airport! Seriously, though, my husband had mobility limitations, and they always gave us a ride on a cart through the airport right to our gate. I think I arranged it ahead of time with the airline, but I can't recall the details. Allow extra...

Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

"And my thinking is it would be a bigger waste of the diners if Amtrak goes under because of lack of funds and/or because they did not meet the mandate to get rid of F&B losses." That would be true if that were the only alternative, but I think it's debatable that the present course is one that...

Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

I only drop in and out here, and may have missed some pertinent things along the way. However-- If I understand correctly, although at present this involves only two trains, isn't this a terrible waste of the new dining cars, which took forever to get, to now let the kitchens sit unused? It...

    Acela 2150 decouples at 125mph (2/6/18)

What's wrong with you, Triley??! People prove each other wrong on here all the time whether they are or not. It's a rule. And give reprimands for whining, go on political rants, derail threads (I'm especially good at that), fight tipping wars, etc. etc. But I can't seem to stay away for...

CL from SOB or EKH to WAS

Willem, It seems you had more than your fair share of YMMV's on your trip! Hopefully the next one will go more according to plans. I've almost always had very good luck on my trips, and have never had any serious surprises. I certainly agree that going with the flow is a needed trait for...

    help with booking

Also one thing to remember if booking round-trip instead of one-ways: If you cancel an early segment, or even if the conductor fails to scan your ticket within a certain time, all your remaining trips are automatically canceled. Many prefer to book one-ways instead of round trips for that reason.

CL from SOB or EKH to WAS

,,, I have requested two roomettes across the hall from each other on multiple occasions. Most of the time, I have gotten roomettes across the hall from each other. At least once (and at most twice, I don't recall for sure), the car attendant had juggled room assignments earlier in the journey...

Amtrak Train 91-CSX collision in SC (2/4/18)/Liability issues

THANK YOU. Prayers for all those affected. Amtrak is having more than its fair share of troubles lately, although most seem at this point to not be of its own making. Hopefully all the injured will make full recoveries.

Refused Red Cap boarding because I'm not old or disabled

The worst car attendant I've ever had was out of Chicago, in a sleeper. As for assigned coach seats, though, on my last trip with two friends on the Crescent, our coach car was almost empty. There may have been a dozen people total in the whole car. One friend and I were seated together, with...

Option to transfer to the same train?

Thanks, AmtrakBlue. A glitch sounds like the best answer!

Option to transfer to the same train?

Thanks, guys, but I'm still wondering. Yes, it is the #2 Sunset Limited. No mention of any other train number or name. (The Texas Eagle was the thing I was recalling, but there is no mention of the Texas Eagle or any other train numbers.) All options say "2 Sunset Limited." I took a...

Option to transfer to the same train?

I was reading a thread on Alpine TX, and the Holland Hotel, got interested and then did a "what if" check on amtrak.com. (Yes, I have lots of spare time!) Alpine to NOL shows two options: The Sunset Limited straight through to NOL. The Sunset Limited to SAS, and transfer (hour and a half...

Great info, KmH! I wish I'd known to look at the Rocky Flats site when I made the trip last year.

sleeper availability for dates in 2018

Thanks, Tenn Traveler! It does say "at this price," I believe. That makes much more sense.
