    LIRR Question

Just an FYI - There are currently no peak fares on LIRR or Metro North. Suspended until at least the end of the year. Off-peak fares apply at all times.

    What should Amtrak change?

High-speed rail could compete with air in many places around the country, if we would just build it already. NYC-Chicago could be a five hour train ride based on trains that do similar distances in Europe and Asia. I think tons of people who up to now don't think of the train would take that...

    Chicago

I like the Embassy Suites in River North on State right by the Red Line Grand stop. I lived there for 6 weeks after an apartment building fire several years ago. Good rates in winter usually. I will say this about the airport area. One, the $5 for the O'Hare trip in for inbound only, for going...

    Starbucks Train on SSB

It is overrated. It's over-roasted coffee so has a burnt taste.

The pre Euro Tunnel train to Paris...

Ah, I didn't know that one had recently ceased as well. So now we're down to one I guess. I sent a client a couple years ago on the Sicily one, I really need to do that. I would guess that maybe that one will stick around? Hopefully?

The pre Euro Tunnel train to Paris...

I think there are only two places in Europe to still be able to ride a train onto a ferry (Germany-Denmark stopped in 2019). Italy mainland to Sicily, and Germany to Sweden. I really want to do that before those last two disappear.

My review of my Gathering train trips - October 2021

That's like Seattle when I lived there in the 90s, everyone was new to town. 😄 Of course, I was one of those as well...

My review of my Gathering train trips - October 2021

Some pointers for next time or for anyone else reading this. From Union Station take either the #7 or #126 bus on Jackson to Dearborn. (There are a couple of other ones that run during rush hours only) The Jackson Blue Line stop has an elevator mid-block between Jackson and Adams. As it was you...

Interesting Article Opposing High Speed Rail

Yeah, people's perceptions v. reality is an interesting concept. There have been similar studies on lines at grocery stores when they ask people how long they've been in line. Say a person has been waiting in a line for 5 minutes, they walk up and ask him how long he's been waiting and and he's...

    The North South Connect

Imagine if all the money spent on the Big Dig had been used for transit instead. Increase access that way and still tear down the viaduct, get rid of the freeway going through the city center altogether.

Back to the drawing board for LaGuardia AirTrain

If we actually invested in infrastructure in this country they would build a new subway line from Flushing to LGA (and another section that stays under Astoria Blvd bypassing LGA) then into Manhattan under 96th St. Have one line join the 2nd Ave subway and another continue along 96th to the UWS...

Unmasked NYPD Officers assault NYC Subway rider asking them to mask up @ 8th Street 10/19

No, everyone is supposed to wear masks while on trains and inside enclosed stations. AT. ALL. TIMES. That is the rule. The cops were not in the right in any part of this. Also, COVID can linger in the air in an enclosed space for quite a while depending on the ventilation. So yeah, being...

Unmasked NYPD Officers assault NYC Subway rider asking them to mask up @ 8th Street 10/19

It doesn't have to result in a fall or injury for it to be assault. It's assault.

    Ray Suarez Tweets About NEC

I'm not even sure how hard we're trying to change. Here in Chicago we finally got an ordinance that gives exemptions to the parking minimum rules for new developments if near transit, they refer to it as "transit oriented development." And that has caused some good development to happen in some...

Back to the drawing board for LaGuardia AirTrain

A ferry connection to the east side of Manhattan, really far from any subway stops (and no, the 2nd Ave subway I would not consider close when you have luggage), and being let off at the least used terminal at the airport helps almost no one. Even for the people who live near the ferry docks on...

Back to the drawing board for LaGuardia AirTrain

Extending the Astoria line is my preference for sure. I do like the idea of also doing an AirTrain extension. There are definitely airlines that will route international itineraries with connections between those two airports so being able to make a faster and easier connection would be great...

Back to the drawing board for LaGuardia AirTrain

My guess would be probably not. But as much as I want a rail connection to LGA this seems like a huge waste of money for a plan that, in my opinion, doesn't improve access over the Q70-SBS and M60-SBS buses. My guess is it falls to the next gubernatorial term, and I don't think she'll be the one...

Back to the drawing board for LaGuardia AirTrain

Article from NY Times, New York's new governor is putting the LGA AirTrain plans on hold and having a review done. Hopefully a better plan comes out of this because Cuomo's was terrible. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/12/nyregion/laguardia-airport-airtrain.html?

    Chicago

As someone who bikes here daily I do take some issue with their bike scores and rankings of the stations. Clybourn on the UP-N and NW lines being listed as a biker's paradise is maybe the worst one. Except for being a few blocks from the Bloomingdale Trail (which will only help you if you are...
