    Speeding up the TE

A million here, a million there ... pretty soon you're talking real money. While Illinois could pay to speed up a state supported train, the TE is a national network train, so the dollars (if that's the obstacle) would come from Amtrak.

    Around Germany in 28 days

LH 401 is JFK-FRA. Looking forward to following this report.

Bedroom on CZ drops almost $1000 overnight

If one observes a price drop similar to the one in the thread title, I offer this advice: Bucket, Danno.

How Amtrak Could Have Saved Columbus, OH Train Service

"Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the Corporation shall provide through rail passenger service between Washington, D.C. and Chicago, via Cincinnati". Technically, a train routed WAS-PGH-CMH-CIN-CHI would have met the letter of the law. Commercially, it may have been relatively...

FY2017 Federal budget news is good!

I know it's a figure of speech, but it seems like for Amtrak, getting thrown under the bus would be the ultimate indignity.

    Skyline Connection-Crescent Star

Actually a thread from 2003, temporarily revived in 2010. I'll put a note in my calendar for 2024.

    Trump and Amtrak/Budget cutting funding

Until Congress actually votes on a budget resolution, appropriations bill, or continuing resolution, we do not know whether they want to cut, increase, or maintain Amtrak's funding.

High speed train travel on the Northeast Corridor is not feasibile

Exactly. Had they been riding the Zephyr instead of relying on their own transportation, there would have been no disaster. But you cancelled the train during the off season and cannibalized the equipment for other routes, leaving them to their fate.

    Excellent report, thanks for sharing!

Paris to Warsaw on a Russian Railroad Train! (Summer 2016)

Great trip report! I took that train from Paris to Berlin last April. Nicer than most sleepers in my experience; very comfortable and well maintained. I tried to book on the first day the tickets were supposed to be available, with no luck on the RZD site, so I used Rail Europe instead, which...

    Affordable hotels around Seattle/SEA

With a private room of course it's not an issue. Shared rooms in most hostels, including the American in Seattle, have lockers in each room, generally big enough for a large suitcase. Bring a padlock or use one of theirs for a small fee.

Largest Metros Without Amtrak Service (How to Serve Them?)

Surely there's a way to route it through PHL.

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

The fact that it's in the Viewliner II thread just makes it twice as funny. ;)

The next few years, take 2

There's the express bus to South Beach, half a dozen other local bus routes that don't serve Hialeah, a dozen or so car rental locations, several hotels within walking distance, and of course the airport. All of which can be reached by transferring to TriRail, though the percentage of potential...

Chicago Union Station - New Boarding Process for Coach Class Customers

The ability to not "check in" at all that Amtrak and most passenger railroads around the world are offering is a big plus. If you have a ticket, whether paper or electronic, just go to the train. Why would there be a need for another step in the process?

Chicago Union Station - New Boarding Process for Coach Class Customers

Somehow, just about all 700,000 of them manage to get to the right platform and onto the train without check-in, boarding passes, seat checks, priority boarding groups, gate deadlines, and other artificial bureaucracy (except Eurostar, due primarily to Schengen border control).

DB to withdraw all remaining sleeper trains

I remember informational displays in Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof from 10 years ago; apparently it's now scheduled for completion in 2023. Merkel's mention of Paris to Prague could be considered alliterative advertising; Mannheim to Munich might have mitigated the assumption that she was referring to...

    Central Europe Train Ride Recommendations

City Night Line is gone after 11 December. ÖBB will take over some routes; not sure what equipment they will use, but they also have some bilevels. See http://seat61.com/news.htm for more info. They do presently operate Hamburg-Vienna, which I imagine would continue but is not specifically...

    Stations With Worst Locations

To be slightly more accurate: Both. The border of Champaign and Urbana is Wright Street which cuts wright through the middle of campus, just west of the Quad. Champaign is to the west and Urbana is to the east. Green Street cuts right through the middle of campus the other direction, just...
