    Issues with an SCA

Maybe the poster is a super jerk.

    Midwest Venture introduction

Aren't the cars for the Hiawatha part of a separate order? They're being bought by Wisconsin, not Illinois, Michigan and Missouri.

    What should Amtrak change?

People on this board have been trying to single level the Cap for as long as I've been around. Nothing will happen until Amtrak determines the future of long distance equipment.

Is Amtrak allowed to have "Commuter Rail" service?

Seems to me that PATH is a heavy rail transit line, not a commuter train. BART is also heavy rail transit. Amtrak's operation of the Valpo trains was kind of a holding action, awaiting approval of a subsidy by Indiana authorities. When Indiana failed to act, the trains were canceled.

The effect of the potential rail strike on Amtrak

A nationwide railroad strike would devastate the economy. No politician, of any party, wants any part of that.

What kind of hostility did you encounter?

Twitter trend leads to spat between BART, Amtrak

    A lot of childish behavior.

Commuter rail to an Amtrak station

The most obvious one is the Music City Star in Nashville, a city that doesn't have any Amtrak service.

Hammond in Whiting is the station staffed

At one time, Hammond-Whiting was a fully staffed station, but that was long ago. At one time all the eastern LD's (except the Cardinal) and Michigan trains stopped there. Today, only a couple of Michigan trains serve the station. For some reason, its status has been completely downgraded.

Taking the Train from Miami to Alaska!

From a look at the map on this latest episode, it looks like he's heading to the Mount Washington cog railway in New Hapshire, the Durango and Silverton and the Texas Eagle/Sunset from Chicago to L.A., and will then catch the Alaska Marine Highway ship in Washington. So, it's not a direct train...

Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay area service

The Amtrak Viewliner order is complete. I highly doubt if there will be any future Viewliners, given the crappy job done by CAF.

Taking the Train from Miami to Alaska!

I don't think he's letting facts get in the way of an entertaining presentation.

    1968 NYC Empire Service schedule

Four notes: 1. The overnight trains shown in the schedule were probably long distance trains from Chicago or Detroit. 2. Overnight trains depended heavily on U.S. Mail traffic, which went away before the advent of Amtrak. 3. These trains may have not made it through to April 30,1971. Penn...

Taking the Train from Miami to Alaska!

From the preview at the end of the first episode, it looks like he is talking about the Strassburg Railroad as the "oldest" railroad. He's also not talking trains directly across the country as indicated on a map in the episode. He seems to detour to the Durango and Silverton and is not talking...

Amtrak should make fare evaders pay

It would cost way more to prosecute fare evaders than any revenue recovered. Not to mention, the train would have to stay stopped at the station until the police arrived and statements were taken from the crew.

Is restoration of the National Limited feasible?

I see no reason for either proposal. The Sunset East was basically a failure. There's no need to make CL and TE into one train.

    Midwest Venture introduction

The original plans for the Midwest/California cars were supposed to be similar to the California/Surfliner cars used on the West Coast. Nippon/Shayron which was supposed to build these cars, but could not produce a car that would meet stress tests. So, the contract went to Siemans for single...

    Catepillar Moving HDQS to Texas

Citadel is owned by Ken Griffen, often described as the "richest man in Illinois." He was also the major financier of the Republican party in Illinois. When his hand picked candidate for governor lost badly in the primary to an extreme conservative (actually he came in third, losing to two...

Saluki 8/7/22 Superliner sleepers as Axle counts

Amtrak has been using Horizons and Amfleets for decades on the CN. How come all of sudden, they don't work. I have to believe that CN's maintenance of its crossing gates is at fault. They're probably doing something that saves 50 cents per gate on maintenance. Of course this could be...

Saluki 8/7/22 Superliner sleepers as Axle counts

How in the world could single level cars not set off crossing gates? I mean, CN hauls thousands of single level fright cars! And, of course, locomotives lead all passenger trains on former Main Line of Mid-America. This has just become ridiculous. CN just needs to fix its faculty grade...
