    Lamy Station destaffed again

I've booked Amtrak's shuttle (provided by Roadrunner) Lamy to Santa Fe and again Santa Fe to Lamy two days later to continue our trip west. Can I assume the shuttle will match the train times even if the train is late either day?

    Superliner upper bunk

I tried connecting and disconnecting straps while up there but found the contortion needed to hook/unhook the one furthest from the ladder to be impossible due to lack of head room. I could do it seated with legs dangling over the ladder, but then couldn't get my legs past the straps. Maybe if I...

    Superliner upper bunk

This is what I ended up doing, but it meant completely remaking the bed, too. What was the original designer thinking? It's not that way in the Viewliner.

    Superliner upper bunk

I love sleeping, napping, reading, and looking out the window in the upper bunk of the Viewliner. I'm agile and moderately strong so getting into and out of it is a breeze. The placement of light and wall pocket are correct: at the far end from where you climb in. The Superliner upper bunk is...

    Planning southwest trip

Indeed! Love all these tips! One of my first dates with hubby was in a shop selling bottles of hot sauce in cold Syracuse, so my friends thought of him as The Hot Shop Guy. To this day he drinks it straight from the bottle. Me, I'm more on the mild spice side, but at least I know the difference...

    Planning southwest trip

Thank you! This is excellent! We rather opted not to take the adorable train from Williams, preferring to spend more time in Flagstaff and the canyon area.

We're staying at the haunted hotel! 😁

    Planning southwest trip

Thank you! I haven't had actually good Mexican, new or old, since the last time I was in Mexico a decade ago. 😥

    Planning southwest trip

Then you must know Zuni Cafe where our son was sous chef until he was executive chef at the Black Cat. Then he started his own catering company. What a city, but so expensive. Thanks for the tip about ice! I'm from Syracuse originally and still can't stand the stuff. I'll bring my Yaktrax...

    Planning southwest trip

We're thinking of going to San Francisco from Chicago by way of Santa Fe, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, and Los Angeles, spending a night or two in each place. We love to walk and don't want to rent a car. How does one get from Lamy to Santa Fe? How is the weather likely to be in Santa Fe and...

How would you feed your train?

That is ... just... I don't know if there are words to describe! With Judy Garland in there, no less! Can you imagine getting fed that way?! 😃

    California Zephyr EMY-Chi departing 12/27

Is Darryl one of them? He was our top favorite on the 6 the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Made the trip extra fun while being absolutely professional. That train arrived in Denver a record-setting 17 minutes early.

    Mask requirements on Amtrak

I'd say it walked a very fine line of its own between humorous and deadly serious. There was definitely a note of parental exasperation with the problem children you know they'd been dealing with. I didn't get the sense that they were joking about the fact that they could in fact put you off the...

    Mask requirements on Amtrak

On a recent trip on the CZ, I took great delight in listening to the announcement saying "if you become a problem child, we will stop the train, put you off it, and you can walk to your destination." Any wonder the compliance is higher and the temper tantrums are much fewer on trains than on...

Bus drivers union calls Denver Union Station a "hellhole."

A few days ago we took a break in the Denver station while headed for Chicago in the CZ. While there were some characters in the area between the platforms and the station whom we chose to avoid, we found the hustle and bustle inside to be a welcome change from the desolation and abandonment one...

    2021 Infrastructure Bill

It was in 1936 when they moved the trains out of downtown. That was 60 trains a day right where downtown crowds of people were constantly crossing those rails. Due to excessive death, dismemberment and pollution, not to mention traffic tie-ups at the 29 grade crossings, the rails were moved by...

Nostalgic and Historic Amtrak Stations Still Used Today

Well, the train station is! Utica used to be more important than Syracuse at the time, which is evident in its amazing station. Such a pity that the city itself has suffered so much at the hands of organized crime, both legal and illegal.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

On our recent trip west on the CZ I was surprised to see them doing this. One couple politely refused and they were totally fine with it, while another couple welcomed a single diner. It does seem quite counter to the very clear warnings about what happens to the "problem child" who repeatedly...

    2021 Infrastructure Bill

Syracuse NY was one of the first cities to be bisected by the new interstate. It was so poorly designed (apparently by a California company that didn't understand what nine feet of snow in a season can do to roadways), they have never stopped working on it. In the heart of the city is a spot...
