    2019 Schedules?

I still miss the full National Schedule booklet of train schedules. It helped to plan multi-city trips much better since the online booking system often is not the best for these arrangements. I recently overheard an Amtrak ticket agent tell a customer that there was "NO WAY" one could travel...

Lunch on a late eastbound CL?

Amtrak has always had an underlying scheduling goal to get the eastbound Capitol Limited into Washington DC before 12 noon. But as long as it is the only long distance train serving Pittsburgh, not going to happen. On one of David Gunn's CL eastbound schedule it was carded to arrive at 11:59 am...

Lunch on a late eastbound CL?

There is no policy at present...... Was on a Capitol Limited that arrived into Washington DC at nearly 3 pm in both April and May 2019. We didn't get lunch...... Breakfast was offered from the Diner/Lounge in the morning, but that was it! I had purchased a sandwich the day before out of...

    Rumor: Amtrak/MTA/CDOT ownership swap

Doesn't make too much sense for CT and NY to give up what is basically their "priority" on the NEC from New Rochelle to New Haven. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Amtrak looks to negotiate some sort of "out" on the New Haven to Springfield line. It's Amtrak shortest route, competes now...

Sleeper complimentary meals during a long delay...

Meals are still served. I've never seen sleeper (or coach for that matter as well) go hungry. Was on a five hour late Coast Starlight, and Amtrak gave out snack packs to the coach passengers. Amtrak either breaks into backup stock in the diner to keep it going, or they will have food brought...

What's the longest vacation you've taken by train?

This 1985 trip you took is definitely worth a trip report and recount of your experience back then! There's a few discontinued trains on Amtrak's list that I wish people would give their experiences on, particularly the Desert Wind, Pioneer, Montrealer, Gulf Wind/Breeze, etc.

Rumor: Coast Starlight to Lose Business Class

The product seemed strong just a few weeks ago when I was on the Coast Starlight. But that was just a select period of time. But all of Amtrak's business class products need not only some sort of uniformity, but better amenities and perks offered. The Coast Starlight business class had nice...

    Capitol Limited (30) Dinner

Was on Capitol Limited a couple of weeks ago and in April eastbound out of Chicago and the SCA came by and took times/reservations for passengers to go to the diner to get and partake in the box dinners. Couple of weeks ago, unlike April trip eastbound, the Capitol Limited left Chicago with...

    Help planning a northeast trip

For summer, the Vermonter route north, should be good to still allow enough daylight into Essex/Burlington, VT. There used to be an inland route train from Boston to Springfield that connected with the Vermonter at Springfield, but that’s LONG gone. I don’t think, but it may be worth while to...

    Car 3009 on Capitol Limited

Well, last year I can remember rooms 16 and higher being sold in the Superliner Trans/Dorm Sleeper, but now they are even selling at least rooms 1 through 4 in the Superliner Trans Dorm/Sleeper in the Capitol Limited. More sleeper space being opened up for inventory that way. Glad Amtrak is...

    Car 3009 on Capitol Limited

Thank you! I think it is a regular Superliner Sleeper subbing for the crew car. No one rides long distance trains though - both 3000 and 3001 are booked on day I am traveling - weekday nonetheless too! And I would have paid for a bedroom if this is subbing for the crew car!

    Car 3009 on Capitol Limited

Supposedly, according to nice Amtrak agent via phone, car 3000 and 3001 are completely sold out on an upcoming day of travel I have in May. Only sleepers available is a roomette in car 3009. I first thought that this may be the Superliner Crew Car, but then I’d have a high roomette #, not a low...

What's the longest vacation you've taken by train?

I’ve done a circle trip many times over the years since the 1990s at least: - Lake Shore Limited/Capitol Limited to Southwest Chief to Coast Starlight to Empire Builder to Capitol Limited/Lake Shore Limited. Stopped along the way and rented a car to get to vacation destinations. Typically took...

Amtrak charging for large carry-on baggage

I ran into the same person at the LAX Metro Lounge I believe. And yes, she saw one elderly lady’s bag was “more than 50 pounds.” It was like 65 pounds. She said she could tell it was over 50 pounds just on site and feel. OK, fine, but she was all over this. She made the lady take 15 pounds out...
