    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

There are always at least 2 Portland coaches, since one needs to have lower level ADA seating and one needs to have checked baggage. Assuming the consist was in the normal configuration, that would mean 4 cars (including the SSL) ended up on their side.

    Hurricane Ida - 08/2021

The Crescent has already been restored to New Orleans. It is the CONO which has not been and it operates west of Lake Pontchartrain rather than via Slidell.

    Stretch/Smoke Stop List

On recent trips since my last post, I noticed a few more deviations from the stations listed here that I think are worth mentioning. On a recent Sunset Limited trip, Lafayette, LA and Beaumont, TX were both stretch stops despite the train being multiple hours late. On the Missouri River...

    Crescent Configuration

Yes, all passengers and crew survived. The locomotive was also repaired and was placed in a museum once it was finally retired a few decades after the crash.

    Capitol Limited discussion

This doesn't directly apply to the reduced consists on the Superliner trains, but it seems like the reduced coaches on the single level LDs may be partly due to the delay in the introduction of the Venture coaches in the Midwest. Many of the Midwestern trains have been using Amfleet IIs...

Has anyone here done every (current) Amtrak route, end to end?

After I finish my current trip I will have completed about 97% of Amtrak route miles, although I am still missing a significant number of short segments. The segments I am missing are: Sacramento, CA-Stockton, CA Norfolk, VA-Petersburg, VA Newport News, VA-Richmond, VA Roanoke, VA-Lynchburg, VA...

    Crescent Configuration

Regarding some LD trips having sleepers in the front and others on the rear, I can think of some logical explanations although I can't confirm whether they are the actual reasons. The LSL configuration makes sense with the Boston sleeper on the front and the New York sleepers on the rear, since...

Canadian border reopening; how soon will international railrestored?

I checked a few days ago and both the Adirondack and Cascades were bookable starting in early January, although I'm hopeful they will resume operations sooner than that. The Maple Leaf was not bookable for any dates. If it doesn't resume operations, I'm curious how the process will proceed...

    Thruway bus and train question

As far as I know, the bus reservation needs to be associated with a train segment. Using the multi-city tool is probably the easiest way to do it, so it is likely best to just wait for that to be fixed if there is a temporary issue with it. Alternatively, you could find more creative ways to...

    Lake Shore Limited discussion

Yes, the New York sleepers are in the rear. The typical current consist is as follows: P-42 (BOS) P-42 (BOS) Viewliner I Sleeper (BOS) Amfleet I Cafe/Business Class (BOS) Amfleet II Coach (BOS) Amfleet II Coach (BOS) Amfleet II Coach (NYP) Amfleet II Coach (NYP) Viewliner II Sleeper...

No Sightseer Lounge on California Zephyr #6 (9)

It's a luxury passenger train which has operated out of Vancouver, BC for years. This year a new route is opening from Denver to Moab, UT, mostly along the same route as the CZ. The train is designed for tourists rather than transportation, and is more expensive but also nicer than Amtrak. The...

    Moynihan Train Hall

The 8th Avenue Station is served by E trains, not F trains. However, that actually furthers your point since it means the F is within a block of the Old Penn Station but not Moynihan.

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

Yes, it is necessary to pass through Jacksonville. There used to be a line which bypassed the Jacksonville area, but it has been abandoned for many years. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perry_Cutoff

    Shortened Single-Level LD Consists

That was removed before the pandemic.

    Amtrak Cascades Service

No, the crew qualifying is still ongoing. It has not yet been announced when revenue service on the line will start.

Is Fraser-Winter park a smoke stop on the CZ

Yes, the normal smoke stops are Galesburg, Ottumwa, Omaha, Denver, Fraser, Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Salt Lake City, Winnemucca, Reno, and Sacramento.

MSP - CHI second daily train poised to receive MN funding

I don't see what makes this a simple issue that isn't worth discussing. There could be reasons specific to this scenario that I'm not aware of which make two separate trains more practical, but in general through running can improve efficiency. I don't see anyone arguing that the Virginia...

MSP - CHI second daily train poised to receive MN funding

Also, both the Chicago and Duluth trains would have to turn around anyway, so through service would not require any more backing up than terminating/originating in Minneapolis would.

MSP - CHI second daily train poised to receive MN funding

Yes, although that possibility wasn't an alternative in the study. The study considered four alternatives, all with a stop in St. Paul: 1. Terminating at St. Paul 2. Terminating at Minneapolis 2. Terminating at St. Cloud and bypassing Minneapolis 4. Terminating at St. Cloud and stopping in...

MSP - CHI second daily train poised to receive MN funding

The 2015 feasibility study proposed a 9:25 AM departure from Chicago and a 2:25 PM departure from St. Paul.
