    Truckee station

There is a long commercial block right across from the station, with a few bars and restaurants. Don't know if California allows package sales from bars, though.

    CUS: Security, Privacy, and You

This opinion piece from the NY Times Sunday speaks eloquently to the issue: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/27/opinion/sunday/je-suis-sick-of-this.html?hpw&rref=sunday-review&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=well-region&region=bottom-well&WT.nav=bottom-well

    Commuter Trains A Soft Target

Of course I had to read the comments. Mondo bizarro.

    Amtrak commercials

There was one on national ABC-TV news tonight, showing a Surfliner but also some other trains.

    Roomettes

Lower roomettes are closer to the tracks and the train's sway is minimized. They're also closer to the three lower bathrooms and shower room. They're also away from corridor traffic. Uppers have better views and are closer to the dining car. Whatever you get, be happy.

Strange article - Amtrak trains blamed for death of 500 crows

Feathered trespassers, that's what they were.

Dark days ahead for the Cardinal?

The 20th Century Railroad Club issued this today: "See Washington, D.C. in style. "Ride with the 20th Century Railroad Club via “Private Varnish”. "The Club last partnered with American Rail Excursions on this trip to Washington D.C. in 2013. Our partner has informed us that railroad...

Rejoice! French toast is returning to the menu

"Thread creep" is often more interesting than the original post. And sometimes more valuable. I am now going to go Google maple syrup packets.

Rejoice! French toast is returning to the menu

This reminds me of my former neighbor in the woods of Upper Michigan, a devout evangelical Christian missionary who refused to vouchsafe the location of his thimbleberry patch. Some things are just not to be shared. (Thimbleberry jam is the equivalent of genuine maple syrup in those parts.)

Rejoice! French toast is returning to the menu

Can one get real maple syrup in those little plastic packets, or does one have to bring a bottle of it?

Rejoice! French toast is returning to the menu

I still can remember the French toast on the pre-Amtrak (circa 1957) California Zephyr. I was young (17) and had never dreamed French toast could be so good. Amtrak's isn't the same, of course, but it's not bad, not bad at all—when done properly.

Rejoice! French toast is returning to the menu

. . . in late April, according to an impeccable source within Amtrak. It will replace the pancakes, which in my opinion were OK, just OK.

    Uncontrolled dogs

The only gun I own is a .50 caliber flintlock muzzle-loader I bought as research into a novel and haven't fired in several years, so I won't jump into the dog gunfight. But I agree that the lack of a universal service dog certification definitely is a problem. Most training organizations do...

    Uncontrolled dogs

The PETA page is impressive and full of good advice for dog people. It, however, does not deal specifically with railroad travel . . . yet. (I am sure it will soon.) My hearing service dog Trooper and I have just returned from a round trip to Arizona on the Southwest Chief. The westbound...

Southwest Chief Derailed in KS 03/14 early AM

This morning Amtrak Status for 3 (15) did not show a service disruption, so I am hoping today's Chief will be back on the Raton Pass route. If not, I will have to engage in some negotiation with the conductors about where to pee a service dog between Newton and Albuquerque.

Southwest Chief Derailed in KS 03/14 early AM

Weird. No status, but Track-a-Train shows it on time at Naperville. (Later. Thanks, AmtrakBlue..)

Southwest Chief Derailed in KS 03/14 early AM

No. 3 (14) status is missing as of 3:45 pm CST. Train was scheduled to depart Chicago at 3. Is it going, or is there a bustitution, or is it canceled? Anyone know?

Southwest Chief Derailed in KS 03/14 early AM

I'm due out on No. 3 from Chicago Tuesday with my service dog. I've seen one report that the Chief will be rerouted from Newton, Kansas, to Albuquerque. This may require some negotiation with the conductors about a site between Newton and Albuquerque where the dog can get some fresh air, so to...
