    3 Days of Food?

Soylent Green would solve SO many problems, wouldn't it?

    3 Days of Food?

P&SR, you have a hotdog and soda for BREAKFAST? Why not cold pizza as we did in college?

    Southwest Chief

I'm heading out on the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Arizona early next week and will report on the timekeeping in both directions.

Amtrak needs a new wine vendor

Manny T, I am well aware of that twofer price . . . but in a typical Chicago cocktail lounge or restaurant, a single glass of house wine costs between $6 and $9. Suddenly the Amtrak price doesn't seem quite so bad. Carrying bottles of wine aboard the train is for folks younger and stronger than...

    Chicago Metropolitan Lounge

The Trainorders thread seems to be just rumors. The last year or so I've taken half a dozen sleepers out of Chicago Union Station, and the Metropolitan Lounge staffers, both men and women, have been exemplary—friendly, polite and helpful. Perhaps the nasty old Cerberuses are gone forever.

    3 Days of Food?

From Union Station Chicago you can walk 3 blocks north to French Market, an indoor venue with all kinds of foods for sale. You could also get sandwiches prepared at the Corner Bakery in the Union Station food court. If your budget allows, there is time between trains, and you can afford a taxi...

    Long time without a shower!

You could take along a World War II GI helmet and . . . Never mind, what the soldiers called that kind of bath isn't very nice. But I agree with RalphCT, you'll survive. AmtrakBlue's idea of using wet wipes is pretty good. Also taking along a washcloth works. It'll just take longer to get clean...

Amtrak needs a new wine vendor

I've always thought the Amtrak plonk was at least drinkable, but then I am a low-budget oenologist whose tastes run no higher than Menage a Trois Silk. That's why I never bring my own wine aboard—the added weight of a bottle or two just isn't worth it to me. A twofer of Woodbridge cabernet in...

Lordy, I just knew that the *ssh*l* quotient would be high in this thread.

Ericjeeper, the dining car crew will think you won big at the parimutuel window.

    Trump and Amtrak/Budget cutting funding

Amazingly, I have NO quarrel with any of the details in Devil's Advocate's post! (We do agree, methinks, on more than we disagree with.) By the way, I always agree with Bob Dylan although I have no idea what he sings.

I just blow all my Guest Rewards points on a bedroom so I don't have to worry about what's on my feet.

    Car numbers

As an elderly deaf person with a service dog, I've taken to asking for redcaps to carry us to our sleepers at Chicago and L.A. Costs a five-buck tip, but does the job. At intermediate stations I ask the agent where on the platform I should stand. At unstaffed stations I just follow the crowd (if...

First timer, not impressed with Amtrak

I wouldn't want to travel with Sodium. Kvetch kvetch kvetch.

Dizzy, tired and rocking motion after a 4 day rail trek

Many of us have thrumming sensations in our legs for two or three days after a train trip. It's a neurological condition that isn't very serious but can get more intense the older one gets.

    Newbern, TN Amtrak Station

Devil's Advocate is correct. Conductors don't sit up in the locomotive to look for passengers at flag stops, but they DO stick their heads out of the window (often on the transition sleeper but sometimes in regular sleeper or coach, depending on the passenger's location in the manifest) as the...

What was Amtrak? Or what was the National Rail Passenger Corporation? How would Alex Trebek rule on that one?

First trip in 4 days, MEM-CHI-ABQ, advice on what to expect?

I second the motion! New riders often experience things veterans either miss or never think about.
