Ferries, Ferries, and still more Ferries

Presumably that low level bridge is on the New Haven’s main line to Boston? How long is the ferry crossing to New London? It sounds an excellent alternative- but then I love ferries.

Is that a chain ferry? Looks like it.

Who in the world are you?

I‘ve been posting for a few months, so I probably should rectify the omission of who I am. In the infancy of the internet, I remember reading some wise advice: never post anything on the web that you wouldn’t be happy to see on your boss’s desk, your mother’s coffee table, or the front page of...

My train trip back to a Civil War town...

Yes, it is. Newark is about 20 miles downstream from Nottingham. The river is tidal from a few miles downstream from Newark.

My train trip back to a Civil War town...

Yes, about 200 years earlier. Newark was historically quite important, guarding the crossing of the Trent - traditionally the boundary between the south of England and the north. More recently it has been a mix of light industrial and agricultural market town, now with a lot of serious...

    Lake Shore Limited discussion

I’m definitely with you in that I like to be on the same side as the opposite track, but I’m more eccentric in that I like to travel backwards in that seat - you get the full view but running the film in reverse, so to speak. Reading these forums I do detect an aversion to travelling backwards...

Getting off at South Station with Back Bay Ticket

Thanks. On the way back south we’ll definitely be starting from South Station, as we’ll be arriving back in Boston by rental car. I know we can take the SL1 bus from Logan to South Station.

Getting off at South Station with Back Bay Ticket

Thanks for the reply, John. It is indeed a B&B we’re staying in, and it looks very traditional residential. I think we’ll go for getting off at Back Bay.

Getting off at South Station with Back Bay Ticket

Since all northbound trains are “discharge only” at Back Bay, and the fares are the same, it would be most surprising if there were a problem. My question is the opposite. We’re booked to South Station but are staying at W Brookline Street. It looks walkable from Back Bay. Is this a sensible...

    Never Go Back?

You can take the town out of Essex, but…

Are there Eastbound tracks and Westbound tracks on the North Empire Builder route for example?

By “2 main” I presume you mean a double track line, but with both tracks signalled for running in either direction?

    EMY to San Francisco bus

Great, thanks. I suspected as much, but it’s good to know. We’re reasonably fit, and it’s one of those trips where you have to be prepared to carry all the luggage at least some of the time.

Where is this car located on the California Zephyr?

Immediately behind the baggage and transdorm?

    EMY to San Francisco bus

We’ve got to get to 222 Sansome Street. My assumption is that the bus followed by “Thruway Legs” will be the best option. Is that a reasonable/safe walking route?

Where is this car located on the California Zephyr?

Reading this with interest, as it may explain why they keep sending me updated confirmations for #5 in early October. When I booked - last November - we got 532, room 003. Then I got an amendment to 530, room 007, and finally this spring it went back to 532, 003. The other thing they’re good at...

Trip Report. Steve introduces Rosalyn to the Coast Starlight and California Zephyr

Interesting. As to the railfan side, I suspect I’m in a minority - with right-hand running I would ideally be on the left side of the train, facing backwards. That way, on double track, you get to see all the signs and signals for the other track.

My train trip back to a Civil War town...

Nice report. You omitted 🙂 the fact that it is the town of my birth.

My train trip back to a Civil War town...

It is. Northgate - properly speaking one word, though it often appears as two - is on the East Coast Main Line (London to York, Newcastle, and Edinburgh), exactly 120 miles from London.

Acela vs Northeast Regional Train? (Penn Station NY to Providence RI)

Furthermore, Amtrak have got a three-day sale at present - finishing tomorrow- with some good fares on both Regional and Acela. Worth a look.
