    Discontinued Ammenities

I don't recall getting a pillow in business class this past February. And I know it's been less than a decade for them in coach. It was just a couple of years ago (I take the Crescent to Atlanta on a yearly or more basis).

Refused Red Cap boarding because I'm not old or disabled

This is not true. I've been assigned a seat several times on the Crescent.

CUS temporary bag storage, and food options

There is an attendant at the front desk right in front of where you leave your baggage in the Metropolitan Lounge and the storage area is under camera surveillance. It's self-service, but seems pretty safe. When I was there 2 months ago, I left my bags there for about 6 hours and while most of...

    Viewliner Upper Bunk

I love the upper bunk on the Viewliner. I can't say I've sat up in it, but I believe it's doable. BUT, it's the upper window that makes all the difference. I sometimes lay there at night watching the world go by.

Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

There is still in theory the option for 30 more cars. I highly doubt that will happen given the history and the current political environment. BUT, it's possible. I'd go for like 18 more sleepers, 6 more diners, 6 more baggage cars (or baggage/dorms) and have 3 complete more trainsets. But...

Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

Yeah, by itself, you don't save much time (there's not just enough distance nor difference in speed). BUT, you do make scheduling a bit easier when more of your trains are all running at the same speeds.

Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

Makes sense since they're most likely to come out in numerical order, and the city names are assigned in alphabetical order to the numbers.

    WUS

The cheapest. Honestly, Dulles is probably the biggest pain. Reagan-Washington National has convenient Metro access (yellow line to red at Gallery Place) BWI isn't bad either. Hop the bus to BWI Amtrak station and then take MARC to CUS.

Anyone ever have phone charging issues on Amtrak?

I can't think of any reason the outlet would cause such problems. Only time I've seen such issues was a bad cable where there was a minor short in certain positions of the cable that would cause it to discharge.

    Pacific Parlour Car Temporary Withdrawal

I have no idea, but generally, one doesn't associate the Ides of March with GOOD stuff.

LSL and Albany renovations...can I get an update?

Took the LSL to ALB from NYP last night. Arrived on track 1, Boston section was waiting on track 3. The south (older) end of the platform was blocked off due to escalator work. So when I got off the coach section it was on to the new section of the platform. Track work is either done, or...

    crescent NOL-NYP

You MAY be served lunch prior to your arrival in NYC. However, since once the Crescent leaves WAS it's "discharge only" it will often make up time north of WAS and I've seen it arrive in NYC an hour or more early. What this means is that often they will serve an abbreviated lunch and stop...

    First Class Meals

Note, you do have to ASK for the salad. It's free, but not given unless asked for.

    Freight verse Passenger engines

HEP is a big part, as is gearing and traction. Basically Amtrak wants engines that can do up to 110 or even 125MPH and can accelerate rather quickly, and tonnage is a bit less important. The only train Amtrak really has to worry about tonnage on is the Autotrain and even that is low tonnage...

Northeast Regional - Amfleet I or Amfleet II?

Oh, yeah, the Amfleet IIs aren't to terrible for overnight. The seats lay a lot flatter and there's a leg rest that can be raised up. Ironically, I find them... "almost but not quite comfortable". I.e. they're not quite flat enough to lay completely flat and not enough side support for my head...

Northeast Regional - Amfleet I or Amfleet II?

No, the right end has a vestibule with the doors and traps. The left end has simply the pass-through door to the next car and equipment lockers. No vestibule.

Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

Nah, Amtrak just keeps shuffling it around so no one can find it to return it. ;-)

    Service horses

To follow up (and we're getting way off-topic). Many handlers train their own service dogs and if not and it's trained by a 3rd party for some the cost is cost is definitely NOT covered. Also, for many disabilities, the training is going to be very specific and specialized, so developing...

    Service horses

My guess, from this one description is that she was lying. In part because as you say it's temperament and failure to heed commands and constant growling. And I honestly can't imagine a person handing the care of their service dog to a complete stranger like that.

    Service horses

Service dogs are not pets so pet bans don't apply to them. One analogy is to think of a service dog as a medical device, like a wheelchair or walker. Service dogs are defined here: https://www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.html My understanding is miniature horses no longer qualify (but...
