I can only answer the coach question and yes. I annually take the Crescent to ATL (from NYP) and get dinner every time while in coach. Typically a dining car attendant will come through and ask for anyone who wants a reservation. A few times I've simply walked in and waited for a table.

Replace "Amtrak" with "states" and my point still stands. More likely though is Congress provides some sort of extension.

I've wondered the same thing. I wonder if Amtrak can legally "spend" it into an escrow account of some sort that either gets paid out to Nippon-Sharyo upon delivery or back to the Treasury if they fail to deliver.

If anyone knows the answer to that question, they're not talking.

I think it would be great to take the options, but I highly suspect that won't happen. On the other hand, if Amtrak does want more cars, it doesn't make much sense to bring in yet another builder. A lot depends on where CAF is now and how convinced Amtrak is if they could deliver on future...

I'll point out that Acela's been doing this in the US for 15 years, so it's not new to the US (and other countries have obviously been doing it too :-)

I would also definitely recommend writing Amtrak and let them know they're probably losing a customer. I've said again and again, that the experience is a big part of why I prefer the sleeper over flying. Take away the experience (degrade the food, etc.) and that all changes.

Not necessarily, given the way the cars are setup, they might treat 2 FC cars as a single articulated car. Just speculation.

Does it sell out? Or fill up? I know a number of people (including myself) that never pay for FC, but only use points or upgrades.

My guess is since they're discussing HSR, they may only be considering Acela. And for Japan, I'm guessing they're rounding down. Japan's on-time numbers are really astounding.

TylerP42, I doubt highly you'll see an Amtrak Steam Program. It's only in reference to his work at NS, which is pure marketing/nostalgia. I suspect he won't see an advantage for doing the same at Amtrak.
