Crying like Nancy Kerrigan or like Tonya Harding?

Watchdog report faults TSA on Amtrak security

Absolutely. Since pretty much every terrorist attempt has either been foiled by the passengers, or succeeded. At least in the US where we're seeing a 97% failure rate in penetration testing, I don't trust the TSA.

Watchdog report faults TSA on Amtrak security

Too late, they've been there, including a VIPR patrol that had serious blowback for them. (Thankfully!) I have seen them at WAS, but always operating under the direction of the Amtrak Police.

Watchdog report faults TSA on Amtrak security

"Good". The more TSA stays away from Amtrak the better. I don't trust them to handle security on a model plane.

Chances of switching to an earlier connecting train

I've done something similar. Actually saved me a few points and they credited me the difference. (In this case, it was the Crescent to an Albany bound train.)

Chances of getting my roomette downstairs (#13) moved upstairs?

I think the odds of getting roomette moved upstairs is zero. That's a lot of cutting, welding, and heavy lifting. The odds of getting your reservation moved upstairs is far more likely :-)

New menus - nothing vegetarian on the Cardinal?

I was teaching at a weeklong event (where during the day we burned a lot of activities out in the field training, so eating 2500-3000 calories often is the bare minimum). One evening, I sat next to one of the students who looked pretty dejected. She was vegetarian and the caterers had been...

    Long.distance trips faster than driving

Lonestar, I used to do that when I needed to go to Ann Arbor. I could fly out the night before and pay an extra night for a hotel room. Or, get up super early and fly out and deal with airports. Or, hop on the LSL in Albany, get a nice relaxing dinner, watch the scenery go by and then sleep...

    Long.distance trips faster than driving

It can depend. I'm actually facing a similar question in a few weeks. I need to be in Alabama (basically on the state line with Georgia). If I drive, it's 15 hours or so. If I take the train... closer to 20. But, if I drive, I may leave the night before and sleep a bit at a rest stop, so now...

    Crescent Business Class - Equipment

Well, there won't be any leather seats. It's just your average Amfleet II car.

    Crescent Business Class - Equipment

Yeah, when I learned it was basically the 2-2 seating, I figured, "what's the point". Give me SOMETHING for the upgrade. I think having 2-1 seating would be WONDERFUL and I'd gladly pay the upgrade for that.

    Sleeping on coach, long distance

I always find coach seats "just not quite comfortable" for sleeping. I can manage one night, but that's it. If I have an empty seat next to me though I can definitely do fine. I would suggest two pillows, one for your head and one for the small of your back. I just keep my wallet in my...

    It's a good name. I like it.

    Seeking BWI - NER advice

Yeah, honestly, if you're not checking baggage, I'd go with the first train. I've done similar a few times in the past without issues.

Palmetto 89 Incident in Chester, Pa. (4/3/16)

You sort of contradict yourself here. Sure, some luck I suppose was involved, but really, this is engineering. And as others have pointed out, this is a great example of how CEM can and should work.

Palmetto 89 Incident in Chester, Pa. (4/3/16)

Probably should be broken off to its own thread, but as I recall Safe2Safer is based on the Aviation Safety Reporting Systems from the FAA. The idea is that more that we know about accidents, the better we can prevent them. They're anonymous (and with the ASRS handled by NASA as a neutral 3rd...

Question regarding puzzling problem with NARP/Amtrak Discount

I suspect part of the difference is the Maple Leaf becomes a VIA train once it crosses the border. The Adirondack and Cascades are still technically Amtrak trains.

    Train Ettiquette

I think honestly what probably got the most negative response (I know it sort of tripped me) was the idea of handing out "tickets" or taking pictures. Otherwise, I'm all for well-behaved kids on trains.

    Train Ettiquette

Train travellers are a rather relaxed group of people. However that doesn't mean they like their privacy or time interrupted. On the train your coach seat is your only little bubble of privacy. Elsewhere, like in the dining car or the lounge car, things are much more relaxed.

    Train Ettiquette

So Empire Builder and then the Capitol Limited I believe. That should give folks some more insight into what they can recommend (there's a few spots where you can get off the train for 5-10 minutes, as long as you stay right near the train. (Don't wander off, the train WILL leave without you...
