    From Holland to California

When I first saw this post title, I wondered whether it was from Holland, MI or the Netherlands. Would have guessed the former (there is an Amtrak station on the Pere Marquette line in Holland, MI, and I lived there as a kid), but turns out it’s the latter! Interested to seeing the different...

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

The last time something similar happened, it lasted 3 weeks. Obviously this could be faster, but I wouldn’t expect it to be done by next week (though it could be if it ends up being less serious than last time). They are showing several trains as cancelled for all of next week on Arrow -...

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

Del Mar is another area where they have this issue - the tracks there run on top of cliffs and they've been talking about moving them for years (and have had to shut them down there due to safety concerns before). Will definitely miss the views there, but safety is obviously more important.

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

Sounds like this happened in the same area last year and the shutdown lasted 3 weeks: https://www.sanclementetimes.com/movement-on-railroad-track-in-san-clemente-shuts-down-train-services-from-south-oc-to-oceanside/

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

Looks like no Surfliner service between Oceanside and Irvine until further notice due to emergency track work: https://www.pacificsurfliner.com/plan-your-trip/alerts/travel-advisories/ This is because of safety concerns along the right of way. Wonder how long this is going to last - sounds...

    Tuesdays #3 SWC few pictures

Weird to see a Pacific Surfliner car in Illinois - guessing that must be on its way back to California from either Chicago or Beech Grove. There are also a couple cars that look like Metrolink cars - does Amtrak maintain those, or are they something else?

    US railroad labor issues

The IAM union, who previously rejected a tentative agreement and whose cooling-off period was set to expire September 29th, has reached a new tentative agreement. As such, the new cooling off period lasts until December 9th while they vote, so there won‘t be a rail strike until at least then...

    Cancellation Policy

I just cancelled a sleeper trip due to not feeling well, and in my case Amtrak seemed to stick to the policy - they did ask for a doctors note in order to cancel for a refund. In my case that won’t be an issue, but I wouldn’t count on being able to cancel and get a refund without a penalty...

Amtrak short term cancellations and restorations (2022)

It’s a weekend closure for track work.

    Midwest Venture introduction

Saw a picture of today's 352 someone posted elsewhere, and it had one Venture coach and the rest of them were older cars. That is weird - though having them more spread out would mean a greater chance of getting one on my next trip on the Wolverine (at least as long as they don't make me sit in...

Southwest Chief Ft. Madison station stop

Just saw 4(21) out of Fullerton on the webcam, and it had the following consist: Engine 48 Engine 188 Transdorm 39023 Sleeping Car 32002 Diner 38024 Sightseer 33002 Coach 34049 Coach/Baggage 31045 The only car that was on 3(19) is the first engine 48 - the rest of the consist is different, and...

Southwest Chief Ft. Madison station stop

So I bought a Railstream subscription to see this consist. I looked in Chicago and saw the missing Sightseer, though was unsure whether one of the sleepers was a transdorm (I didn't see a difference between the two sleepers) and was a bit surprised to see one non-sleeper with windows on the...

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

Hoping this means they restore the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel Bus - don’t see any more excuses to delay (save for perhaps hiring drivers to run it - hope that doesn’t delay it too much). With the increase in Detroit-Ann Arbor bus service, restoring that means I could get all the way to Canada (and...

    Midwest Venture introduction

Yeah - this is very hard to find. I even did a one-month Railstream subscription in hopes of finding out what Wolverines have them (and checking out the SWC consist mentioned on another thread), and I'm not seeing any cameras on the line the Wolverines run on.

Southwest Chief Ft. Madison station stop

Perhaps that was food for the coach passengers, since no Sightseer Lounge means no cafe car…

Southwest Chief Ft. Madison station stop

Interesting - though if they take cars from the Sunset for the Chief, wouldn’t the Sunset then be missing cars?

Southwest Chief Ft. Madison station stop

Also, was one of the sleepers a transdorm, or was it two regular sleepers? I’m currently booked in the transdorm on 3(24). Hope the coach passengers can get something to eat - they could do some kind of mini-cafe service out of the diner as they had on 8 the first night out of Seattle, though...

Southwest Chief Ft. Madison station stop

Hmm - wondering if I might end up with this consist on my 9/24 trip. I sure hope not, but if this was 3(19) and it turns same-day in LA to become 4(21) and then turns next-day after CHI arrival, it would be 3(24).

    Midwest Venture introduction

Any idea if these are still on the Wolverines? They were originally on 350/355, but were off those by the time I rode 350 in August. Pretty sure they had shifted to 351/352 then based on social media, but I heard today that they’re not on 351 anymore. That means they’re either on 353/354, or...

The effect of the potential rail strike on Amtrak

I know Amtrak wasn’t really a major concern with these negotiations - long distance Amtrak passengers are a drop in the bucket compared to freight rail and it’s impact on the economy, and I know they probably don’t want this to become a problem again before the midterm elections. Was really just...
